Regulus (α Leonis) is the brightest star in Leo, a quadruple star system about 80 light years away. The dominant star in the system is a blue giant star. The name comes from the Latin word Rēgulus meaning "prince."
Denebola (β Leonis) is a solitary blue-white giant star about 36 light years from the Sun. It is a variable star as well, varying in brightness over a few hours. Its name comes from the Arabic phrase ðanab al-asad meaning "tail of the lion."
Algieba (γ Leonis) is a binary star system consisting of two red giants. The system lies about 130 light years away. The name comes from the Arabic word Al-Jabhah meaning "the forehead," although Algieba appears in the lion's mane.
Zosma (δ Leonis) is a blue-white solitary star about 60 light years from Earth. Its name comes from the Ancient Greek word meaning "girdle," referring to its location in the hip of the lion.
