just wanted to pop by and say how much i ADORE redux. seriously one of the best fics i’ve ever read and not just xuexiao. the characterisation is just so GOOD like every time you write something about their little quirks or head movements or how they would react to stuff i feel so validated, with xy and a-qing anyway but i also really love how xxc actually is a human with (albeit very few bc let’s face it it’s HIM) flaws. i’m a big fan of xxc who can also be bitchy and snippy sometimes while still being extremely considerate and you just do that so well.
and while the boyfriends™️ are obviously my favourite thing ever i also love xy’s and a-qings relationship so much, it’s always like “awww they’re just like siblings. wait no that was a little creepy. but awwwww” and that’s just so real honestly
so yeah this is basically just me being a sap about your fics, as xy would say but like. they deserve it sm. the backyard is full of bones was my first ever mdzs fic before i had even finished the novel or cql or anything. so yeah you have permanently shaped my view of these characters which i would not have any other way bc you just get them so well.
ok enough of me rambling so just have a great day/week/month/etc and i cannot wait to see where you go with redux and everything else!! <33
i'm like. a month late to replying to this because i've just been sitting on it in my inbox periodically reading it and having a lot of feelings about it but like. thank you. very very much. i am verklempt.
man i'm excited to get back to redux once i finally finish my big bang fic

Adaptation Proposal: partially genderswapped and very gay “La Nozze di Figaro”
This adaptation is based around Cherubino becoming Cherubina. Cherubino is usually played by a woman anyway, but now the staging would acknowledge the character as female too. Cherubina would be one of the Countess’ lady’s maids, who has a massive crush on her mistress. Cherubina is young and bad at hiding these things, which is why the Count wants rid of her. After banning her doesn’t work, he tries sending Cherubina off to war (because why shouldn’t women be soldiers!), but she sneaks back and ends up marrying Barbarina, who has been flirting with several minor characters of both genders.
Now, the Count’s fears that the Countess might be tempted by Cherubina makes him a massive hypocrite, in addition to being a regular philandering asshole. Because the Count has been seducing and sleeping with everyone he can, male and female, and is a flirt with every servant in his palace. Figaro is either oblivious to this, or is clever enough to play dumb that the Count has long given up trying to seduce him. Figaro might occasionally be a dumbass, but he’s leagues ahead of Count “Way off bass” Almaviva.
As it happens, Cherubina isn’t entirely barking up the wrong tree with the Countess. While she’s mostly played straight, her duets with Susanna get...flirtatious. As Susanna helps her mistress dress, they sing "Sull’aria”
A little song on the breeze What a gentle little Zephyr This evening will sigh Under the pines in the little grove.
with their own share of sighs, furtive touches, and eyebrows waggling at that last line.
The gender roles throughout the opera would be fluid: there would be a number of men (countertenors) among the Countess’ servants, and there would be women soldiers, grooms, etc throughout the palace. I would keep the vocal ranges as-is, however. While you an replace women with countertenors in some ensembles (which changes the tessitura and sound somewhat), replacing a bass with an alto/soprano would cause significant balance issues. I would also resist replacing Susanna and the Countess with men, since this would be a very woman-forward production.
You would probably want to gender-code the clothing somehow. Because gender is both important and not important here, you’d need to highlight it in the costumes while ignoring it in characterization and roles. This is largely for clarity that’s needed in a somewhat chaotic stage production for the audience to see what’s going on. If you’re going to subvert gender expectations, you need the audience to know that. This costuming could be as simple as “skirts and trousers,” which would create some fun opportunities for costume design. The lady soldiers would have nice double-breasted military coats, with matching sensible skirts (and plenty of pockets to store watches, letters, and orders, and the added recitativo line “Grazie! Ha tasche!”) The male maidservants could have beautiful flowered shirts (possibly lowcut) and trousers. Other options include strong color-coding, or @chibisketches suggestion: “dudes wear big pink bows. Solved”.
One of the only absolutely straight characters is Figaro, who has eyes only for only for Susanna. Susanna might be a bit of a flirt with the Countess, but it’s obvious she’s all-in for Figaro.
