“It is what you just did, that was curious,” Caitlyn replied, taking a glance over her shoulder. One moment ago she could’ve sworn there was no little girl in this clearing of the forest. One moment ago she was all by herself, trying to make it not so, by coaxing a few mome raths to scurry out of a hollowed tree she knew they were hiding in. But twenty minutes of lying down on her side later, none of them did so much as peek out of that tree. “Unless you were actually asking what was being curious, in which case, almost everyone and everything, I believe.” The girl sighed, decided that was enough trying for the day, and straightened up. She turned around and sat cross-legged on the grass, eyeing the little girl in front of her.
“Where did you come from now, flowerling?” She tilted her head and smiled. “And that was also curious, by the way.”
Alice grinned back at the girl. She liked her almost immediately, from her lovely purple hair to her wide smile (which nearly reminded Alice of someone else she knew, but their name seemed to disappear just when she was on the verge of remembering it). Sitting down in front of her, Alice crossed her legs as well, absentmindedly playing with the grass as she spoke.
“I was just wandering around the forest, looking for something to do. It seems to have become somewhat of a hobby of mine, to be honest. I didn’t mean to intrude or anything, it just seemed like you were looking for something.” Alice leaned forward slightly, noticing a small form peeking out from a hole in the tree behind the girl. It quickly hid when it noticed her watching, but Alice was able to recognize it before it slipped away. “Oh, are you trying to find mome raths? They tend to be tricky little things, but I’ve learned they’re rather fond of biscuits.”
Alice fished around in the pocket of her dress for a moment. She was certain that…ah, there it was! She drew out a small, thin cookie and held it out to the girl proudly. “The Hatter gave this to me during one of our tea parties, and I decided to keep it in case I was hungry later. I believe it’s meant to be dipped in tea, but I’m sure the mome raths will still appreciate it.”
