I just can't get over the fact that duan zi'ang insisted he wasn't a ji bei spy and xiao shuhe decided to trust him when he said that and then xiao shuhe thought that they had confessed all their secrets to each other when duan zi'ang expressed his feelings, so xiao shuhe doesn't know that duan zi'ang was ready to drink poison when given the mission to kill him, he doesn't know that duan zi'ang had turned against ji bei. his brother tells him that duan zi'ang is a ji bei spy and quotes a letter that was intercepted and duan zi'ang's reaction proves there's at least some validity to what his brother is saying, so now he doesn't know what is true about duan zi'ang's feelings in the first place. he warned duan zi'ang from the start that if he made a move against the kingdom it would be unforgivable and as tumultuous of a relationship that xiao shuhe and his brother have, that is still the person he was closest to as a child and he has a lot of memories of xiao shuqian protecting him and he's always hoped that they could repair their relationship and now he feels like duan zi'ang is forcing him to choose him or his brother and how can he choose the person who's a spy that infiltrated the kingdom over his brother? so he's literally just trying to deescalate the situation in any way he can and then duan zi'ang murders his brother (to save xiao shuhe's life) but how can xiao shuhe see it that way given the information that has just been thrown at him? when he's learned that his father is dead and he just saw his brother die right in front of him? when he's now responsible for a kingdom when that's something he never wanted?
