Tip #164: LET IT ALL HANG OUT. When actors are asked to express emotion, they may be tempted to “go big,” for example, shout or make violent gestures. Professionals refer to this as “chewing the scenery.” Such a performance may be off-putting and even laughable. But there are times when the material demands going over the top. A famous example occurs in the “Hey, Stella” scene of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The more contemporary example pictured here is from the acclaimed sci fi short “The Other Side” directed by Kevin Issa. The director cleverly omits the character’s voice, allowing us to focus on the physical imagery. “The Other Side” has been chosen as a Mobile Movie of the Week.
