The cast is led by Bruce Campbell, Lucy Lawless, Ray Santiago, DeLorenzo and Jones.
Peterson’s Next Play 4/27/2015
Famous running back Adrian Peterson is back in the NFL after allegedly hitting his four-year-old son with a switch. The only question is: what do we do with him? The Minnesota Vikings have made it clear that they are willing to take Peterson back with open arms, and are hesitant to release him. However, Peterson has publicly stated that he is “uneasy” about accepting their embrace. "I know there are a lot of people in the organization who want me back," Peterson said according to nfl.com. "But then again, I know the ones who don't. It's a difficult transition, and it's not just about me." It seems the Vikings have four options. They can release Peterson, keep him with his current salary, trade him, or offer him more money. I feel the best way for the Vikings to go is to stick to their guns and keep Peterson. He is one of the best running backs in the league. With more than 10,000 rushing yards and six trips to the Pro Bowl in his first seven NFL seasons, it's no wonder why he would be appealing to other teams. However, there are factors other teams should consider before attempting a trade for Peterson such as his age, and his baggage. Peterson is now thirty, and even though most may not consider that to be old, it normally marks the beginning of an end to an athlete's career. His skills are still above average, but age is not something the NFL takes lightly. For example, Troy Polamalu, former strong safety for the Pittsburg Steelers, has just announced his retirement at the age of thirty-four. The decision was made after the Steelers let it be known that they want a younger defense for 2015. Peterson may have four years before he is in the same boat and four years can go by fast. Any team that picks him up would also have to deal with the risk of losing fans. Though the case involving the alleged abuse of his child has been closed, some still consider his actions to be unforgivable. The team that plays with Adrian Peterson in 2015 would have to come prepared for possible backlash and opposition. All in all, I believe it is best for Adrian Peterson to stay put in Minnesota. It seems to be the simplest option for him and for the NFL.
Lamenting LACC’s Former Glory 4/1/2015
A glimpse of the Los Angeles City College athletics website will reveal information on basketball schedules, volleyball tournaments, and championship wins. Unfortunately, this site has not been updated since Jan. 14, 2009. Since the loss of collegiate sports in 2009, LACC has suffered. Enrollment numbers have dropped about 8.5% in the past year according to LACC’s ASG Executive President David Allsop. Student athletes are a large demographic among colleges and losing that potential diminishes the amount of money the school is bringing in. It also lowers graduation and transfer rates among students at LACC. “We know athletes graduate. Athletes transfer. Athletes are not here to play around.” Allsop said. “… At Valley College 73% of their athletes graduated last year. At Pierce 78% of their athletes graduated or transferred. At ELAC 63% of their athletes graduated or transferred. Our graduation rate for the students at our school I believe is 8%. I believe for transfers it’s about 9 or 10%.” Athletes matter in community college, but without sports any student athlete searching for a school to attend won’t give LACC any attention. Our numbers will keep dropping. “We got 1.1 million dollars from the chancellor’s office for student equity.” Allsop said. “… How come we can’t use that for sports and athletics? … All sports are not expensive.” Renovating the woman's gym would be a major first step in reviving the athletic program at LACC. On March 25, 2015 a board of trustees meeting took place, and the renovation of the woman’s south gym was discussed. Many people spoke up at this meeting on behalf of putting these plans in motion. Teachers that hold classes in the south gym are upset by the lack of resources in this building. Nancy Cairns is “one of the more passionate instructors” that teaches in the south gym. She cares about student success, and about where this college goes. “I'm actually pre-med, and most of our programs that were scheduled into the south gym project are pre-med programs.” Cairns said. “... You may think the south gym is just a gymnasium, but it's not. It's got classrooms which service other parts of the campus. … I spent four years of my life away from my family traveling around California to develop these programs for my students at LA City College, and I feel disrespected, and upset that no one is talking about this.” She is not the only teacher upset by the lack of interest in improving this facility for City College students. “The gym that currently exist at LA City is substandard. It does not provide the proper resources for students to learn how to move well and be well. I can not express that more explicitly.” says Peter Parasiliti, a Kinesiology professor. Leaving the south gym in the condition it is in is hurting the school more than most people realize. Students that need specific programs that are taught in the south gym may miss out on obtaining their AA degree or being able to transfer, because they are not able to take the classes they need. The improvements have been put off for years and people do not want to wait anymore. “It's been sitting and waiting to go out for construction. There's been lots of delays.” says Kinesiology professor Jan Mcveety. “Our building can not wait to be completed. We have faculty and students basically suffering... We want our project finished. It needs to be finished now.” The sooner the project is finished the faster LACC can get it's enrollment numbers up, and help more students. More resources means more oportunities. “All that money is going to go to renovating, to bring back weights for weight class, for classes in kinesiology like health, yoga, dance, the gym, athletics, and the training area.” says the LACC Senator of Safety, Health, and Wellness David Rico. “We have a nice field but we have no sports.” The cancellation athletics does not have to continue forever. The Cub mascot could come back, bringing students together to cheer on their team dressed in red, white, and blue. School spirit could reign throughout the campus once again and LACC could be restored to it's former glory.
Clippers off to a Bad Start 12/1/2014
The Staples Center went dark and a spotlight came up as Tichina Arnold began to sing the Star Spangled banner, opening the game on Dec. 1, 2014 for the Clippers.
Flashing, colorful spotlights surrounded the audience and the jumbo-tron displayed “We are the Clippers”. After the L.A. Clippers starting six was introduced onto the court, the fight was on against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
During the first quarter, the Timberwolves seemed to have an easy time stealing the ball. The Clippers’ butter fingers did not help produce their finest moments on the court. J.J. Redick, guard for the Clippers, made a few game changing moves that night. He made the first three pointer of the game, assisted by Chris Paul. During the first few minutes the score stays close. The Timberwolves gave it all they had and managed to keep up with the Clippers, before taking the scoreboard for themselves. Quarter one ended in favor of the Timberwolves with a score of 34-31.
The Clippers seemed to realize they were giving away easy points in the first quarter, so when the second quarter began they took over. After about two minutes in, the Clippers’ guard Jordan Farmer ties up the score 39-39 with a 27-foot three point jumper, assisted by Spencer Hawes. From that point on the Clippers did not lose the lead again. Quarter two ended with a score of 65-50 in favor of the Clippers. The crowd’s cheers couldn’t get any louder with the turn of events.
“Clippers Nation Get On Up” was displayed across the jumbo-tron and the audience continued cheering. Spirits remained high, and excitement filled the air as half time ended and the game picked back up. The Timberwolves had looks of determination across their faces. Giving up was clearly not an option. After Clippers’ center Deandre Jordan made a two-point shot, the Timberwolves forward Thaddeus Young made a driving layup causing Clippers fans to groan.
The Minnesota Timberwolves gave this game all their effort, but whispers of “blow-out” could be heard around the stadium. Thaddeus Young gained his team another two points with a 4-foot shot assisted by Corey Brewer. After that, the Timberwolves score did not change for quite a while. The Timberwolves were able to gain a few more points but the third quarter ended with a score of 101-68 in the Clippers favor.
During fourth quarter, the Clippers held their strong lead even though the Timberwolves were playing hard and fast. The Timberwolves gained 33 points, but in the end their hustle did not did not get them the win. The Clippers took the game with a final score of 127-101.
Bruins and Trojans Battle for Victory 12/1/2014
The University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Southern California are famous for their rivalry. Once again Los Angeles was divided between red and blue on Nov. 22, 2014, as many fans got to witness these two teams go head to head at UCLA’s home football stadium, the Rose Bowl.
Since 1929, the UCLA Bruins and the USC Trojans have been fighting in their annual football game. UCLA has won 31 of these games and USC has won 44, with only 7 ties. This battle has raged on for 85 years and has created traditions for both schools. Every year before this game UCLA invites its students to a pre-game bonfire. At this bonfire everyone is welcome to burn a red t shirt and get a free blue Bruins shirt in return. Saying this major event caused school spirit to spread across L.A. would be an understatement.
As the game went on UCLA did not let up and USC fans were clearly not pleased with their team’s performance. USC’s defense needed more aggression. UCLA’s offense was so slick that there was no problem running straight into the end zone. For a moment the Trojans were able to get the score tied. That was until the Bruins swooped in for an interception, causing a nice set up for a third touchdown.
In the end, UCLA took their third win in a row against USC, with a final score of 38-20. They had become the PAC-12 South favorite team after their victory, but unfortunately could not hold up against Stanford. Now that the two team’s football season has come to an end, fans get ready for upcoming sports, and patiently wait to see who will win the battle in 2015.
Post-Game Brawl Ends Victor Valley Bowl Hopes 11/24/2014
Victor Valley College concluded their regular season undefeated on Nov. 15, 2014. After San Diego Mesa College faced defeat with a final score of 21-13, the two teams came to blows.
Ranking No. 1 in the Southern California Division poll, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Victor Valley College would be receiving an invitation from the California Community College Athletic Association to play in the Bowl. It seems that all went downhill after their last game against San Diego Mesa College.
According to the Daily Press, Victor Valley football coach David Hoover said that postgame, SDMC provoked VVC. The referees made no attempts to step in and get involved in the brawl. Hoover said the fight started when an SDMC player punched a VVC player and his teammates came to his defense.
During an interview with Rene Ray De La Cruz, staff writer for the daily press, Jaye Tashima, athletic director for Victor Valley College said “We had an almost flawless season, with none of our kids being ejected or disciplined. We don’t want this one negative action to overshadow what our team accomplished. We’re No. 1 in the entire state — don’t take that away from our kids.”
It is truly sad to see the season end for Victor Valley like this. After all of their hard work and discipline, it was confirmed that they are suspended from post season and will not be playing in the Bowl. They did however earn their first American Mountain League title. The team had not won a title since the 1970’s so this is a big accomplishment for the school.
Head Coach David Hoover has posted on the Victor Valley football website “I think we proved this year that we are a topped ranked junior college football program, going 10-0 and winning the American mountain Conference Championship.”
Who's on the Road to Superbowl? 11/12/2014
The current NFL season has surely been a long one, but it won't be long now before we're looking at Super Bowl 2015. Fans all over the country are still praying that their team will make it all the way. Oakland Raider's fans may not have the same hopeful attitude, seeing that the Raiders have gone all season without even one win. Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, and New England Patriots fans however are loving NFL 2014. These four teams are currently holding the top four ranks in this season's standings and have the highest chance of going to playoffs.
The last time we saw the Cardinals play at the Super Bowl was in 2009, and it did not end well for them. They have no Super Bowl rings, so seeing them at this season’s Super Bowl would be a pleasant surprise.
The Detroit Lions have neither Super Bowl rings, nor Super Bowl appearances. Seeing them so high in the standings has definitely come as a shock to football fans this season.
The Denver Broncos can’t be blamed for wanting to recover from the blowout they suffered in Super Bowl 2014, where they lost to the Seattle Seahawks with a score of 43-8. They have made seven Super Bowl appearances, but only hold two Super Bowl rings.
New England Patriots last saw a Super Bowl in 2008 when the played, and lost to the New York Giants. They hold three Super Bowl rings, and seem to be hungry for a fourth this year, currently holding the top spot in the AFC.
There are less than eight weeks left till we are on the road to Super Bowl. There is still time for other teams to fight their way to the top. My prediction is that the Super Bowl this season will be the Arizona Cardinals vs. the New England Patriots.
