“FROM DOOM TO BOOM”
by Collin van der Sluijs
At age 12 Collin van der Sluijs was already studying old painting techniques in Goes, the Netherlands. After completing his formal education he moved to the south of the Netherlands and creates work he describes as “personal pleasures and struggles in daily life,” and that @colossal says “frequently examines themes of the natural world such as the cycle of life.” In Chicago in 2016 for his first U.S. solo show at @VerticalGallery van der Sluijs found some time to paint a couple of walls, this large wall on S Michigan Ave painted as part of Columbia College’s Wabash Arts Corridor, with the assistance of @j.renda_artist. Providing valuable research assistance on endangered and threatened birds of Chicago, Jennifer Hoffman reports that the Yellow-headed Blackbird on the left side has already disappeared from Chicago and the Red-headed Woodpecker is at risk of the same fate. @collinvandersluijs/ @wacchicago/
