While at Reynolda, Chick and her parents especially enjoyed the little painting on the far left by Martin Johnson Heade called Gremlin in the Studio (ca. 1871-75) for its reminder that artists in the 19th century had quirky senses of humor and playful friendships too. (Heade’s artist pal Frederic Church would draw these gremlins in their letters to one another.)

Last weekend, Chick took her parents to see the new exhibition at Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Cross Pollination: Heade, Cole, Church, and Our Contemporary Moment. They especially loved Martin Johnson Heade’s “Gems of Brazil” from @crystalbridgesmuseum, but they are completely biased towards art about birds.

At Reynolda, Chick and her parents spent some time talking about Roxy Paine’s Bad Lawn (1998). Since they are firm believers in not having a monotypic lawn (read: they are friendly to dandelions and other weeds and eschew lawn chemicals that ensure homogeneity of grass), she thought they might like this sculpture and the question it poses about what makes a lawn good or bad.

Chick has been loving Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light on loan to Reynolda House from The Neustadt Collection in Queens, NY. The lamps and windows are stunning; as an artistic little bird, Chick particularly enjoyed the section about process and the palette of different colors and textures of glass the artisans had to work with. When you visit two museums in a day, cool things happen. Like getting to see two paintings by Amy Sherald. Chick was pretty excited.

Today, Chick is joining Reynolda House Docent-Volunteers and members on a road trip. After a lovely time at North Carolina Museum of Art‘s exhibition with work by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and other artists, she flew over to the West Building to check out 20th c. and American art. Chick was so enjoying her visit to the Uptown Mint Museum yesterday to see "State of the Art," that she neglected to get any pictures. Then she found these stools from MoMA in the gift shop and had to hop up.
