Emilie du Chatelet was a mathematician and physicist in France in the 1700s. She searched for underlying laws of nature. She suggested a way to find out whether different colors of light carried different amounts of heat (they do). And she proved that the energy of a moving object is not proportional to its velocity, as Newton thought, but to the square of its velocity. And she urged Louis XIV to encourage women's education. She died in childbirth at 38. #emilieduchatelet #historyofphysics #childbedfever #voltaire #newton #wavelength
