how did this happen to you?
tbh no one gives kara enough credit for how unintentionally funny her "I don't normally... inhale" line was
autism is autisming because i just spent all afternoon watching childish things. like. on loop. like. about six times. and now im thinking about kind of a weird yet whumpy au
thinking about kara introducing herself to schott sr in 1x10 as "a friend of your son's"
thinking about this introduction, the most informal she's ever been to a civilian, being the thing that lets winns dad figure it all out.
her identity, her relationships, specifically her relationship with his son. he doesn't make a big flashy event of it, because that's not his style. psychological torment is more up his alley. he does, however, use this information to find out where winn is going to be, uses this information to drug and kidnap him literally right outside her apartment
thinking about how karas negligence, how one tiny, indiscriminate slip of the tongue, almost cost her best friend his life.
thinking about this absolutely eating kara up, completely destroying her with guilt, because it's one thing to be making mistakes starting out and learning things as a brand new superhero, but it's an entirely different conversation when those mistakes, however indiscernible they are from the public eye, put the lives of the people she loves and countless others at risk
and of course, winn wasn't there. so he doesn't know why kara is being so weird and fragile, avoiding him, seemingly on the verge of tears every time he tries to have a conversation longer than three minutes. he just thinks she's being overprotective, spending too much time in the supergirl mindset and thinking he needs to be saved all the time. how is he to know kara almost killed him? maybe he thinks it's his fault, that maybe it isn't so easy for a friendship to bounce back after one party confesses their feelings.
thinking about 1x10 angst, but make it kara
asking because 1. i'm a glutton for angst and 2. i trust your opinions and hcs beyond all else but what do you think winn's life would've been like if his dad hadn't been arrested? do you think he and kara would have ever even met(😭💔)??
okay first of all im honoured, thank you so much 🫶 when do i receive my official #1 Winn Schott Jr Fan certificate
and second of all this is very interesting and I've actually never thought about it
so the whole timeline here is actually pretty muddy: in 1x10 winn says he watched his dad get dragged off to prison when he was 11, in 2x20 he says he was interrogated about his dad when he was 10, and in 3x14 mary says he was 9 when his dad ran them off the road and forbade her from going near him, so we're working with three possible outcomes:
1. sr runs mary and winn off the road and threatens her. they all go home, except mary effectively ignores her own son until sr is out of the picture, and then takes his absence as her opportunity to leave
2. sr runs mary and winn off the road and threatens her. she packs her bags and leaves that night, leaving winn in the sole care of his father for two more years until he is arrested. they call her at the police station and of course, she doesn't show up
3. same as option two, but winn, having blocked out most of this (and in no doubt helped by his concussion), has very confusing and muddled memories and can't accurately recall details like his age when it all happened. maybe he was only 9 when sr was arrested, and mary was trying to flee with winn because she knew of his plans for chester dunholtz, maybe this was only days before he actually was arrested.
okay so, we now have two more options if sr had never been arrested:
1. sr, mary and winn stay together as a family. no one goes anywhere, and things do not get better. mary effectively ignores her own son after they are run off the road, and winn long gives up on ever having a relationship with his mother again even though they live in the same house.
2. mary flees after she and winn are threatened. winn is left in the sole care of his father, and things do not get better. his "anger" as winn puts it eventually progresses into actual physical abuse.
and of course this all hinges on whether or not sr actually committed the crime in the first place- did he do it, and was just never caught? or did he end up deciding against killing dunholtz, for whatever reason? there's a fic out there where he made winn, unaware ofc, make the actual bomb to kill him, which I love. anyway, judging from the fact that winn grew up in Newark and his dad owned a factory, we can say he was at least well off at home, finance wise, and since he never would've gone into foster care some of my headcanons no longer work: issues with food stemming from food scarcity (not knowing when his next meal was going to be), bullying (since no one would recognise his name), and he might not be as reserved socially because of that, he might have (marginally) more self esteem. I guess what I'm saying is he might have less societal trauma, might feel like less of a social outcast, but what he would lack there would definitely be made up for in familial trauma. maybe if his dad never committed the crime, he would have directed his anger onto winn instead, who would grow up and realise properly what a monster his father is instead of being clouded with little kid admiration for him? he would continue to grow up petrified of becoming him, terrified to have his own kids/be a father for fear of turning out like him, rather than being petrified of becoming him in a snaps-and-goes-crazy-and-hurts-the-people-he-cares-about way. kind of the same, but shifted slightly.
I guess what I'm saying is that winn is fucked either way lol. having winslow schott sr for a father just never seems to work out well, funnily enough.
What are your feelings/headcannons on the whole situation with Winn’s father trying to kill him and all and the car accident??
oughgg my poor boy
I think that incident was one of the most pivotal/formative moments (at least that we saw/canonically) for his character tbh. winn was an incredibly smart kid, but he was blinded by love and admiration for his parents, for his father, to realise what was actually going on. and honestly, I firmly believe that if he hadn't been sitting there concussed and confused, he might have figured out what just happened. (also, he got the scar on his chin from that accident, which lines up well irl because jerjor did actually get it from a car accident)
also I can imagine those weeks recovering from the concussion being absolute torture for him lol, no screens or tech or reading or tinkering, just dark rooms and headaches and boredom.
mary says that night was the night he threatened to kill him, but we don't know what happened when she wasn't there, we're going off her word alone. there might have been some incidents that winn either doesn't remember or doesn't bring up (curse you supergirl for not giving us more backstory) or at least some veiled threats that he was too young to pick up on. id argue that was just the night his dad threatened to kill him out loud/infront of someone else
I have read a fic where his dad let little winn help with/make the explosive he used to try kill chester dunholtz, which is super interesting and super angsty, which I love!
