Overheard in the Sunflower Peacekeeper classroom

6 year old : Ms Deepa, I am sooooooo excited for Santa to come to my house. There's only 13 more days.

Me: Really? Only 13? How do you know that?

6 year old: Weeell...I know he comes on...I mean my mom told me he comes on 25th. And today is 12th. So if you count to 25...(and she proceeds to prove her statement.)

Me : I see you you are right, it is only 13 days away to the 25th.

Adjacent hovering just turned 4 year old casually, unknowingly stirs confusion and controversy: Santa is coming to my house in 7 days.

6 year old : 7 days? (counts 7 up on her fingers...) wait...he's coming early to your house? On 19th?

Just turned 4 year old: Uh-huh..

6 year old : But I thought Santa came on the same day to all the houses. (looks at me for confirmation as I busy myself to try and avoid eye contact with her) How come he is coming to your house in 7 days?

Just turned 4 year old : Because 7 is my favorite number and it's my favorite number because my brother and sister are 7 years old.

6 year old battles conscience as to whether or not to correct 4 year old.

Meanwhile, another 6 year old and her 3 1/2 year old brother have silently attached themselves to our conversation.

Second 6 year old : In our house sometimes Santa comes on the day before he comes to other houses and sometimes the day after. Sometimes on the same day. It's his choice.

3 1/2 year old brother: Yeah... it's his choice.

Second 6 year old : Of course. It depends on the dishes.

My ears perk up - I sense a potential learning moment for me.

Me (casually) : Depends on the dishes? How come? I'm interested in knowing about that.

Second 6 year old (earnestly) : Because the last time, when Santa came, he did all the dishes. The sink was clean in the morning and there were no more dirty dishes.

3 1/2 year old sibling : Yeah...no more dirty dishes.

Me : That was really kind of him to help out like that.

Second 6 year old : Yeah...so in our house he will come when there are dirty dishes in the sink. Or something . Because he is really kind.

3 1/2 year old sibling : Yeah...he's really kind.

Second 6 year old : Yeah, that's like his present to the adults.

And they all walk away...once again I have become redundant while having learned something new...this time on the house cleaning skills of the esteemed Mr. Klaus who like all Montessori students clearly has the privilege of choice !!
