Is (not) a toy!

I was commissioned to make a child's sized Master Sword. And it’s done!

They did not want some of the more refined finishing done on it so it’s rather raw as far as one of my pieces go. But it’s for a 10 year old. Let them smash it up!

It’s 28 1/4 inches long by 7 7/8 inches wide. Since it’s made of wood it has some weight to it, but not too much. Its light, but not like a foam sword. Hopefully the automotive paint I used on it stands up to time.

Experimenting with Duplicolor Anodized purple because the regular purple I use isn’t being made anymore. It’s pretty light in the purple department, so I might use it as my replacement Violet.

Remember, child’s sized props for costumes, and full sized ones are available at my Etsy store! Still with back order. I have 4 more of these to make.

Getting this far.

When I make a sword for someone there is a bit of finality when it comes to attaching the handle. Once I get the handle on the sword, it becomes whole and I feel accomplished.

This is a small sword, and the handle took a bit of working with a wood file to get it to an acceptable shape. But once the test fit suggested all was good I slid that puppy over the wooden tang and finalized the assembly!

However, this is not enough to keep it in place. Movement will cause the glue to separate from the wood. And that will cause the handle to fall off. Insert, the dowel!

You can do this with any project, but doweling will keep sandwiched pieces from splitting, or prevent motion inside a joint.

There it is all hammered in place.

Just a final pic checking the straightness of the handle. And the overall length is 28 1/4 inches. It’s for a child, so it’s not full size. My creation method really lets me make it any size needed!
