[image ID: the characters of ranboo and tubbo in a forest at night. ranboo is holding a flashlight and looking straight ahead with a frightened expression. tubbo is holding a lantern up near the side up his face and looks skeptical of what he’s seeing. the lantern’s light is illuminating them both with a yellow glow. looming behind them is what’s implied to be a dreamon; a white blob-like creature with long fingers that are pulling back the trees and bleeding into the paper past the black border outlining the piece. there is white text at the bottom that reads “Snowchester: UNSOLVED”. /end ID]
Prologue // black bird, black moon, black sky, black light
Word Count // 198 words
A/N // Hello and welcome to the world of Spellslinger! This is a Wild West Witch DSMP AU centered around Radio Duo aka the characters of Wilbur Soot and Ranboo. A brief summary of this AU can be found at this post. This AU has multiple inspirations, the biggest of which being the Tumblr post started by user @/otherwindow comparing witches and cowboys as the same entities separated by time of day, which the title of the fic itself is taken from. The Prologue title is taken from the song Everything Black by Unlike Pluto & Mike Taylor. Also I want to take a second and shoutout @b1rdza and faer fic acne scars and cowboy boots as I consider it the standard when it comes to cowboy AU’s and also shoutout to @crow-boo who has graciously let me ramble to him about this AU at extraordinarily late hours of the night. This short prologue is written in 2nd person POV but the rest of the fic will not follow suit, instead being written in 3rd person POV.
Now, with all that out of the way, let’s ride.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
You look up, and you see the nighttime sky.
You think nothing of it, at first. It is a familiar sight to you; one as familiar as the many scars that marble your nimble-fingered hands. A sight that has always comforted you in its unwavering reliability. A sight that leaves you with a sense of both longing and belonging in equal measures. A sight you know with every fiber of your being.
Then you realize the sky you know so well is wrong.
It’s all wrong.
There are no stars twinkling down at you from above; not a single one as far as your widened eyes can see, and the moon is also nowhere to be found no matter which direction you turn your head. You are filled with an unspeakable panic that seizes your chest and makes you unable to breathe. You start running, never taking your eyes away from the sky, desperately searching for the moon and the stars, your moon and stars, you can’t find them, where are they, please, tell me where they are please where are they why can’t I remember-
