Oops, Chimney fire
We usually need a chimney-cleaning in early February. My husband was planning on doing it Wednesday, but we had rain sprinkles, and the metal roof becomes extremely slippery in rain. Today was sunny, but he had a class to teach, and didn't get home until 3:30ish.
W-h-i-c-h means the chimney is a bit cruddy inside, and when I left the flue open for a few minutes after adding more wood. Chimney fire.
Since the roof is metal, chimney fires aren't an automatic emergency. I closed the flue firmly and decided to wait it out. Kept my ears open - the tell-tale sign of a worsening chimney fire is a roaring that sounds like a train approaching your house. This got a bit stinky (creosote burning) but didn't develop into a bigger problem. Settled down once it was deprived of airflow.
Happy Friday. I didn't burn the house down. Let's go dancing!
