Chin State- Myanmar

Chin State, in north-western Myanmar, is an incredibly mountainous region, with an average elevation of 5000 - 8000 feet. Its highest peak is Mt Victoria, which rises to 10,017 feet. The Chin people often do not have middle, or last names, but one name which may reflect the achievements of their grandparents, or the grandparents wishes for the childs future. The naming of children in this region is of great importance.

What’s happening in Chin State?

If you’ve followed our work for even a short time, you probably know about the Karen, Shan, Kachin, and Rohingya… but have you heard about what’s happening in Chin State?

Chin State is located in western Myanmar just north of Rakhine State and shares international borders with India and Bangladesh. The region is mountainous and sparsely populated, with a total population of less than 500,000. 

According to Human Rights Watch, “The conditions faced by ethnic Chin are largely underreported, in part due to restrictions imposed by the military government and the inaccessibility of the region… These include extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrest and detention, torture and mistreatment, forced labor, severe reprisals against members of the opposition, restrictions on movement, expression, and religious freedom, abusive military conscription policies, and extortion and confiscation of property. ”

Different state, same story. 

Like other ethnic groups in Myanmar, they too have faced oppression and terror at the hands of Myanmar’s military junta, especially since the 8888 Uprising in 1988 which led to increased militarization in Chin State, forcing many to flee Myanmar.

Last week fighting broke out between the Myanmar Military and civilian resistance fighters in Chin State, forcing more than 15,000 people to flee for refuge. Through a network of local partners in Chin State, we stepped in swiftly to help 500 Chin refugees with food, water, cooking supplies, and flashlights.

Our local partner wrote: 

“Due to the protests across Myanmar and joined by Chin State and Sagaing Division, the region has witnessed heavy and brutal retaliation by the military junta. There was indiscriminate live bullet firing of protestors, door to door searching of houses and torture and intimidation. Four civilians who protested peacefully were shot, and one succumbed to his injuries. Many protesters were warned and also sent to prison…

The regional NGOs and Churches [at the Myanmar-India border] need support to be able to help sustain this large influx of refugees. There is dire need of food, clothing, shelter and other nutritional food for the refugees. For these reasons and many more this relief is needed and it will be needed for many months ahead.

This is 3-month-old Thangboi*, the youngest son of Nengboi*, a refugee from Chin State. Nengboi has three children, and her husband was arrested by the military and recently released.Thangboi was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus and referred to receive a brain MRI by a doctor in India. They crossed the border to avoid the Myanmar Military and Indian Army. Now the family is struggling with food security, the medical care of Thangboi, and proper care for the other two siblings. Thangboi has also suffered from malnourishment. Partners was able to provide the family with nutritious food and milk for the baby. 

Our hope is that Thangboi and his family can return home safely, but the situation in Chin State is worsening in the Myanmar Military’s ruthless grip. Children shouldn’t suffer like this. That’s why in the remotest corners where no other help can go, we act. Thank you for helping families and children like Thangboi through your support.
