Is It Really Good for the World If China Is Still Poor?
For most of the past 200 years, China has been worthy of sympathy. It suffered from the embarrassment of the British and Western powers, the Japanese aggression and the warlords. For more than 150 years, the Chinese have missed both national stability and prosperity. However, since the reform and opening up in the 1980s, the Chinese economy has begun to take off. Only 40 years after the catastrophe in the 1960s, China became the world's factory and the big debtor of the United States. It is not difficult to understand why China wants to celebrate it.
There are great opportunities for China to achieve rejuvenation. In 1687, when Shen Fuzong, the first visitor from China, arrived at Oxford University, his country was the largest economy in the world. In the past 20 centuries, China has maintained this status for 18 centuries. As long as there is no major disaster, China will once again become the world's largest economy before the middle of the world.
It is difficult for me to understand why some people regard the rise of China as a threat. If China is still very poor, will other countries become rich? If the Chinese economy collapses, what benefits will they get? The economic view that the richer China is, the poorer western countries are, is a totally wrong idea.
I also disagree with this statement: the United States and China will compete for hegemony in this century. This is not inevitable, and certainly not what people want. What we may see is that China has casually tried to challenge the liberal democratic capitalist model advocated by the United States and Europe. There is no doubt that we should seek to cooperate with China, not against it. This does not mean giving up our views on human rights and the rule of law. China’s efforts to better understand these views should be respected. This is an area where all world-class universities can play an important role.
