Ghorir More of Chinsurah
The free standing structure of Clock Towers of any city/town are witness to the changing history of that place.
Known as the Holland of Hoogly, Chinsurah has this beautiful Clock Tower in the heart of the town. This tower must have witnessed so many events since it was built in the year 1914. There are four clock faces to it and a bell on top . There are also four lamp shades in the four corners which light up at night.Though I have passed-by this place many a times, I have only these two pictures in my google photos which were clicked in the year 2013.
The clock tower was built to commemorate the life of Albert Edward (King Edward VII) who was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. King Edward VII ruled Britain and its colonies from 22 January 1901 – 6 May 1910 . A bust of famous freedom fighter Bhupati Majumder was installed within the boundary of the clock tower in the year 1973.
Chinsurah , though a small town compared to the other big cities of West Bengal is steeped in history of Dutch lagacy ceded to the British during the 19th-century. Hope to click more of the town when I visit Chinsura which happens to be Subir’s maternal native place.
