Noticing and repeating sound words helps children build vocabulary and phonological awareness, both key aspects of early literacy development. They also add a sensory dimension to the reading experience, making it more fun and promoting print motivation!

This book will help build:

Vocabulary – practicing the different bird sounds

Phonological Awareness – hearing the repetitive sounds in the bird calls

Print Motivation – seeing the different styles of text on the page

Letter Knowledge – recognizing the sounds of each letter

This book will help kids practice:

Talking – Repeat the sounds the birds make

Writing – Try writing out the sounds you hear

Extend the book:

To extend this book, try building finger dexterity, needed for writing, by using fingers to paint and blend the colors into a sunrise just like in the book.

Ask your kids what sound a familiar object makes and then try to spell it out loud or write what it would be, which practices letter knowledge.

They can practice playing by making birds from a paper plate, a paper tube, and found objects.

You will need:

paper plate cut in half

paper tube

scissors

glue

crayons or markers

Make your bird:

Find objects that will be glued to the plate.

Decorate tube with bird features.

Glue tube to center of plate, add objects around for detail.

I don’t! When I was a child, I was scared that demons would crawl through the windows and steal my soul, and now I kinda wish they would. But I do keep a fan on for white noise!

We would definitely be talking about all of the perverse, evil and depraved things we want copia to do us!!

Are you named after anyone?

Yes! I was named my mother’s cousin, who named her daughter after my mother!

When was the last time you cried?

Good golly gracious, I’m very quick to tears. The last time I had tears falling from my eyes was this past Sunday when I was cutting some particularly raw onions. But real tears? maybe a week ago when I was listening to Spiegel Im Spiegel - it’s so beautiful! 

Do you have kids?

lol no thank you! I’m trying to get my tubes tied atm actually (you and I are on the same page, Ibi!)

Do you use sarcasm a lot?

I had to think about this, but not really! I like to be a silly goose, and I can certainly appreciate sarcasm, just not how I like to deliver!

What's the first thing you notice about people?

I LOVE THIS QUESTION. I like watching people’s gait (how they walk and hold themselves) or their teeth (I am a veneer hater, I like people’s teeth)

What's your eye colour?

Brown (with a ring of green getting bigger as I get older) but I have a friend who will die on the hill that I have hazel eyes, but I say brown!

Scary movies or happy endings?

Scary movies! love to be spooked!

Any special talents?

I’m extremely flexible - I can put my legs behind my head and one leg behind my head when I’m standing up and hyper mobile elbows (don’t google it lol). Also I used to do improv so I can make things up really easily and be extremely convincing!

besides writing and drawing, I love antique shopping, decorating, and  embroidery

two little grey kitties! they are not very smart!!

What sports do you play/have played?

I played softball for 8 years (hated it), volleyball for 3 months (hated it), and now figure skating and lyra (love it!)

5′6″ / 168 cm

Favourite subject in school?

chemistry and theatre! An elective I took my senior year of high school was a second year of advanced placement chemistry for fun! and theatre - I used to do competitive monologues and was actually the president of my theatre club!
