A.T.O.M. Stop Motion Models: Arthropod Group Shots

Finally (for now), some group shots!  Some of these group shots will make more sense once the first two volumes of ATOM are published (VOLUME ONE COMES OUT AT THE END OF THIS MAY/START OF JUNE!).  There are still some exoskeletal monsters I need to do yet (Herant, Ajaxant, Achillant, Googora, and Crimorax), and a lot more kaiju in general to get done, but this was some good progress.

A.T.O.M. Stop Motion Models: Chlorespa

Our big beautiful wasp came out a little bit larger than I intended her to be (her lego skeleton was even significantly smaller, with her limbs and abdomen all being composed mainly out of wire instead), but scale is hard to get entirely correct when you’re working with junk materials.  I had to redo her head three times to get it to look right - she’s a deceptively tricky monster design to capture!

ATOM Kaiju File #11: Chlorespa

And, after a brief hiatus, we’re back with another kaiju!  The giant monster train keeps on rolling.

Almost all of the giant arthropod kaiju in A.T.O.M. are loosely inspired by/homages to pre-existing giant insect movies from the 50′s and 60′s.  Bobo is loosely inspired by the puppet spider from Tarantula, the Myrmidants are based on the ants from Them!, Girtabane is inspired by The Black Scorpion, etc.  Chlorespa almost got cut because she didn’t fit that pattern - until I found out there was a giant bug movie I didn’t know about (to my shock) with giant wasps called Monster from Green Hell.  I mean, it’s not a GOOD giant bug movie, but it still counts!  Hell, the wasps are even green in some colorized promotional photos!

I mean, I ended up breaking the pattern anyway with a couple of arthropod kaiju coming down the line, but still, it was nice to know that Chlorespa has a precedent like a lot of her peers.

30 Day Kaiju Challege Day 20: Nest of Monsters

The twentieth entry in my take on the 30 Day Kaiju Challenge.  I wasn't exactly sure how to interpret this entry, so I opted for the laziest path that was almost certainly not the author's intention a literal interpretation by making a monster's actual nest.  Chlorespa steals another appearance!

30 Day Kaiju Challege Day 16: Flying

The sixteenth entry in my take on the 30 Day Kaiju Challenge.  I already have a plethora of flying kaiju - more than I want, really, considering how awkward wings are to draw.  I decided to revamp and old one rather than make a new one whole cloth, and eventually I settled on Chlorespa the wasp here.  She basically got some stream lining - her wings are opaque, she's got less fancy ornamentation, her legs are bit shorter and easier to pose, etc.  I basically wanted to make her a kaiju I'd enjoy drawing more often because she might get more to do in ATOM this time around.
