Right after that announcement that Desperado and Sasaki are going to have a singles match at Wrestling Peter Pan, Desperado and Starlight Kid are now hinting on twitter that they might team up to fight the Best Bros on Choco Pro?
I don't know why all my dream bookings for Desperado have somehow been happening one after another these days but I sure am happy about it!
General thoughts on AEW’s Women’s Tournament
I’m bad at organizing my thoughts, but I just want to say some stuff about AEW’s Women’s Tournament now that it’s over. Spoilers obviously.
First and foremost I want to say who my tournament MVP was. I’d easily go with Yuka Sakazaki. Fans of Tokyo Joshi Pro already know how great Yuka is, so I wasn’t surprised to see her have some of the best matches of the whole tournament. Her first match against Mei Suruga was the best Mei Suruga match I’ve seen so far. Her second match against Emi Sakura was maybe the best match of the whole tournament if you ask me. I expected Yuka to do well in this tournament and man did she deliver.
I don’t want to dwell on negatives too much, but I thought the Britt Baker/Madi Wrenkowski was the worst of the tournament, but it’s understandable why that was. Anna Jay had to be replaced at the last minute due to a shoulder injury. I was really interested in seeing how Anna Jay would’ve done here. I feel like her and Britt both have so much presence and fan fare behind them. It’s a real shame this match didn’t get to happen.
The most shocking event of the tournament for me was Thunder Rosa losing clean to Nyla Rose. I didn’t see that coming at all. I thought for sure that either Rosa would make it to the finals, or that if she did lose it’d be due to Britt Baker distracting her or getting involved in her match some how. I guess AEW decided to put their feud on hold during the tournament? Which is an...... interesting choice I’ll say. They are facing each other on the pre-show of Revolution in a tag match involving Riho and Reba/Rebel, although that feels a bit.... out of nowhere.
Speaking of out of nowhere, let’s talk about the Riho/Thunder Rosa match. That match was aired on B/R Live on a Sunday, so I’m guessing a lot of AEW fans didn’t catch it. Personally I was a little bit disappointed in it. It wasn’t a bad match by any means, but considering how good those two women are, I thought it left something to be desired. The ending to the match came pretty suddenly and it just felt anti-climatic to me.
Last thought, on the japanese side of the tournament there was a 6-woman tag team match that featured Hikaru Shida, Mei Suruga, and Rin Kadokura vs Emi Sakura, VENY, and Maki Itoh. The match was definitely a fun one. We got to see more of everyone’s new favorite wrestler Maki Itoh, the undoubtable charm and charisma of Mei Suruga, the unique look and incredible aerial offense of VENY, and of course the attitude of the now-heel queen of mean Emi Sakura. All in all it was a good match, but personally I felt that it really highlighted something. Compared to the women I just mentioned, I felt that Hikaru Shida came across as being so vanilla. She’s obviously a skilled in-ring competitor, but everytime I see her I just can’t help but want to see her do more. Right now I’d liken her to being the silent protagonist of the women’s division. She always wins and barely ever speaks or shows emotion. Maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part, but I’m really hoping to see her go heel soon. I like Hikaru Shida, but when you look at all the big personalities in women’s wrestling, it really does feel like something is missing with her. It could just be me. Idk. I will say that she looked good in her white suit.
