Characters/Relationships: Keith & Shiro (Voltron) Keith (Voltron) Shiro (Voltron) Coran (Voltron) Pidge | Katie Holt Lance (Voltron) Allura (Voltron) Hunk (Voltron)
Snippet:
“Is there anything we can do to make it happen faster?” Shiro asked, trying and failing to keep the desperation out of his voice.
“I’m afraid not,” Coran murmured. Shiro’s stomach plummeted to go live in his feet. “The best we can do is…ride it out.”
“Okay,” Shiro said, glancing back at the still-open door. Keith was kicking his legs on the table, slouched and looking confused and scared.
Watching a team of doctors pull Keith’s prone body from the wreckage of the Black Lion was quite possibly the most horrifying thing Shiro had ever seen.
Keith was so still. Head lolling in the arms of those who carried him, his helmet missing and a thick smear of red across his forehead and down his face. Shiro had spent the following frantic hours as the Paladins were retrieved from their Lions demanding answers, pressing everyone he knew of about the status of his team. No one answered him.
So, instead, Shiro sat in the waiting room for the hospital, bouncing his leg and just waiting. Waiting with his breath held for something to go wrong, for the doctors to approach him with that solemn look. God, what if the injury was worse than Shiro thought? What if Keith’s skull had been fractured? What if-
“Captain Shirogane?”
Shiro’s head whipped up to stare at the doctor standing in front of him. She held her clipboard close to her chest and her lips were pursed, but she didn’t look as forlorn as Shiro had been dreading. Weight eased off his shoulders.
“Yes?” He said thickly.
“Your teammates are all in stable condition,” she said. “Their injuries are severe, but after a bit of time they’ll make a full recovery.”
“Thank God,” Shiro said. He bowed his head, his eyes feeling a lot wetter than they had previously. “Thank God.”
When telling this story later, Shiro would like to recount it with a little more grace. About how he drew himself up to his full height and demanded to see his teammates and how he certainly did not release a high-pitched keen that made heads turn to look, or that he absolutely didn’t start to cry.
But he totally did.
-
In the days following, Shiro made a point to visit each one of his teammates - conscious or not - and ensure their wellbeing for himself. Lance was nursing a dislocated shoulder, Hunk’s leg had been broken, Allura was disoriented and in pain from a hit to her head, but otherwise alright, and Pidge had managed to both break her ankle and slice open her arm. Keith, however, was rarely conscious and when he was, he was disoriented from his terrible concussion.
At the very least, Shiro thought, brushing Keith’s bangs from his eyes to get a look under his bandages, the cut on his forehead was healing up nicely. It had been bad enough to warrant stitches, but it was starting to look a lot less red.
In the corner, Krolia stood leaning against the wall with Kosmo curled at her feet. She kept her eyes on the heart monitor at Keith’s bedside, silently counting the beats. In his seat, Shiro leaned back with a sigh, checking his watch. He had to be back at the Garrison in about a half-hour, but that was fine. He still had plenty of time before he actually had to leave.
It was Krolia who finally broke the silence. “I suppose I have to thank you, don’t I?”
Shiro lifted an eyebrow. “For what?”
“Taking care of him when I couldn’t,” Krolia nodded at Keith. “He wouldn’t be the man he is today if not for you. So...thank you.”
Shiro’s mouth opened and closed. He couldn’t figure out what to say in response to that. In all honesty, he didn’t feel as though he’d done anything. All he’d seen in Keith was a troubled kid who needed a home - a family - and the rest was Keith working to better himself on his own. All Shiro had really done was to give him a chance. Something far too many people had failed to do.
“You’re welcome,” Shiro murmured, unable to say anything else. Krolia smiled and leaned down to scratch Kosmo. His enormous tail thumped happily against the floor. “He’s been through a lot,” Shiro added without thinking.
Krolia paused mid-scratch. “I know. The Quantum Abyss showed me a lot of it. If I ever see any of his foster parents again…” she bared her fangs, leaving the threat unfinished. Shiro couldn’t help but agree with her sentiment.
“You and me both,” he muttered. He glanced back at Keith.
Krolia sighed and stepped around Kosmo to head for the door. “I’m going to go get some of the brown stuff that keeps you humans awake.”
“Coffee?” Shiro tried and failed to hide his amused grin.
“Yes, that,” Krolia said. “Do you want anything?”
“No,” Shiro shook his head. “Thank you, though.”
Krolia nodded and left the room. Kosmo took one look at the door shutting behind her and reacted, stretching and teleporting to the foot of Keith’s bed like Krolia had made it very clear he wasn’t supposed to. Shiro gave the wolf a dry look, but he just gave Shiro a goofy dog grin and wagged his tail. Immediately, Shiro’s resolve to tell him off faltered.
“Fine,” he muttered. “But only until Krolia comes back. Understood?” He had no idea if Kosmo understood or not, but he chose to think the wolf did when he yipped and made himself comfortable on the bed.
Piled on at least three pillows, Keith groaned softly, slowly blinking awake. Awkwardly, he shifted his hand to lift his bandage-clad arm and block out the light from the window that was shining directly into his eyes.
“Hey, buddy,” Shiro said, keeping his voice soft. Keith turned his head lethargically to face Shiro and a little smile spread across his face.
“’iro,” he said wisely.
“Good to see you, too,” Shiro hummed. “How are you feeling since you last woke up?” Keith made a face and did a slow see-saw with the hand still raised to blot out the sun. Shiro sighed, “the same, huh?”
“Mhm,” Keith said. “How’re...the others?”
“Better,” Shiro said. “Pidge regained consciousness yesterday. Matt’s been entertaining her with a dramatic recreation of all of his adventures in space. Lance and his family reunited again and his nieces and nephews seemed very happy to see he was okay. And-”
“Whoa, hey-” Keith moved his arm to press his finger against Shiro’s lips. “Too...too fast. Slow down. Can’t...concentrate.”
“Right, sorry,” Shiro murmured. His eyebrows knitted. “Do you want me to leave so you can go back to sleep?”
“Stay,” Keith’s eyes turned pleading.
Shiro checked his watch. He had to leave soon but he could care less if he was a bit late to a meeting he didn’t want to attend to begin with.
“Okay,” he agreed. “But only until Krolia comes back.”
“Mom?” Keith turned to look at the corner his mother had been occupying for the past few days. “Where is she? And-” he looked down at the foot of the bed, at his enormous slumbering space wolf. “Kosmo-” he dragged the name out. “You’re not supposed to be there.”
“Krolia’s just getting some coffee,” Shiro reassured him, lips quirking into an amused smile at the sight of Keith trying to push Kosmo out of the bed with his feet. “Extra espresso, I’m guessing, since coffee apparently doesn’t work as well on Galra as it does humans.”
Keith murmured something and gave up on his brief war with Kosmo. He turned his head to face Shiro, blinking slowly. His pupils were horribly dilated. Shiro’s heart lurched in sympathy and he stood to go close the blinds across the window. As he did so, he could hear Keith shifting in the bed to watch him.
“Hey, Shiro?” Keith called.
“Hm?”
“Love you. Don’t feel like...I tell you that enough.”
Shiro’s hands froze in place on the blinds. For one terrible moment, he’d heard Keith’s voice rasp out those same words with a hot knife pressing closer and closer to his face.
Keith continued, unaware that anything was amiss. “You gave me a second chance. Took me under your wing. Made me a part of your family. Y’know?”
“Yeah, Keith. I know,” Shiro turned around, banishing the last of the bad memories and turned to smile at Keith still lying on the bed, disoriented. “I love you too, buddy.”
Keith smiled widely. It was the biggest one Shiro had ever seen on his face.
“’m glad,” he murmured.
“Get some rest, Keith,” Shiro murmured, already taking notice of Keith’s fluttering eyelids. “I’ll be here when you wake up again. I promise.”
“Mmm,” said Keith. He let his eyelids fall shut a moment later. Within seconds, he’d fallen back asleep.
The door opened with a quiet hiss. Krolia stepped back in with a steaming styrofoam cup in her hands. Kosmo reacted instantly, teleporting back to his spot in the corner, but from the sharp look Krolia shot the wolf, he’d not gone unnoticed.
“I’m back,” she said, crossing the room. “Did he wake-” she cut herself off. “Are you crying?”
Shiro stiffened. His flesh hand flew to his face where it had become suspiciously wet. He wiped at his eyes with his sleeve, shocked by just how many tears he’d managed to shed.
Concerned, Krolia crossed the room and set her cup down on Keith’s bedside table. She peered up into Shiro’s face, frowning.
“You don’t appear injured,” she murmured. “What happened?”
“Nothing I’m fine. I just-” Shiro drew in a deep, shuddering inhale. “You’ve got a great son. You know that?”
Could you do impaled palm for Keith with a protective team??
Yup, yup! Here you go!
I hope you enjoy!

“Sorry, buddy,” Shiro said sympathetically. “I know how much you hate these kinds of things.”
“It will only be for a little while longer,” Allura promised.
Keith grunted in annoyance but nodded. He sighed and reached blindly for his cup, grabbing it and lifting it to his lips. He paused, whipping his head around and narrowing his eyes over the crowd once more.
He could have sworn…
“Keith?” Shiro called softly. “You okay?”
“I… yeah,” Keith swallowed thickly. Again, he could have sworn he felt eyes upon him but again, there was no one. “I’m fine. Just…being paranoid.”

Doctor Holt cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses. “Mr. Kogane, if it’s alright with you, once you’re feeling…more-able, a detective would like to speak with you.”
“A…detective?”
“Of course,” Doctor Holt gave Keith a bemused look. “You were nearly murdered after all.”
Murdered?
That was certainly news to Keith.
Someone had tried to kill him. Who? And why?
Some of his confusion must have shown on his face because Doctor Holt gave Keith a strange look. “You…do remember getting attacked, right?”
Keith shook his head mutely. He tried to remember that night, but all that came back to him was entering the electronics store and then…

“Keith, hand me the whisk, would you?”
Glancing up from the leaves from the enormous head of lettuce he was trying to tame so he could cut it, Keith glanced at the whisk Hunk had left on the counter next to him. Abandoning his efforts on the lettuce, for now, he picked up the whisk and extended it wordlessly to Hunk. He smiled and took it, flipping it expertly in his hand and stirring the contents of his bowl furiously.
Carefully, Keith eyed the ingredients spread out all over the counter. Flour, sugar, an entire slab of meat gifted to them by the natives of a planet they’d saved ages ago, even an entire bottle of what looked like vinegar sitting idly on the countertop. He frowned, shifting awkwardly on the balls of his feet. When he agreed to help Hunk cook dinner, this was not at all what he was expecting.
“Is all this...really necessary?” he found himself asking.
Hunk whirled around in all of his aproned glory, wielding his whisk like an instrument of war. “Of course! I like to go all out when it comes to dinner.”
“Like...every day?”
Hunk made a cheerful ‘mhm!’ noise and turned back to the bowl. Keith glanced awkwardly at the pot simmering on the stove and made a mental note to help Hunk with dinner more often. He turned back to the purple leafy disaster he’d been trying to cut and lifted the knife and reached around the leaves to press them together as best he could. Carefully, he began to slice through the leaves to create the universe’s largest salad.
For a few peaceful minutes, the only sound was Hunk’s tablet playing some instrumental Altean music he’d gotten into the past few days. He hummed along, pouring the batter into the pan and leaning over to check on the corn bobbing in the hot water. Keith hummed softly, watching absently as his knife came down again.
“Oh, shit-” Keith gasped sharply, jerking his thumb away. He’d accidentally sliced open a thin cut across the pad and he pressed it to his palm to stop the blood he already knew was coming. Hunk glanced at him, forehead creased with concern.
“Did you cut yourself?”
Keith mumbled a response, averting his gaze. Hunk clicked his tongue, reaching out for Keith’s hand.
“Let me see.”
He didn’t jerk it Keith’s hand into his own. Rather, he waited until Keith hesitantly gave it to him to let him see the thin cut across his thumb. Keith found himself a little surprised. If it had been anyone else (except for maybe Shiro) they would have grabbed his hand and fussed over his carelessness. Hunk however...he just lifted Keith’s hand to see it better and gave Keith a small smile.
“It’s thin,” he said. “I’ve got band-aids on hand for situations exactly like this.” he let Keith’s hand go and reached above them for the cabinets above the stove. Keith watched as he pulled out a box of teal Altean band-aids for popped the box open. He fished around for one small enough for Keith’s cut while Keith watched.
“You...cut yourself with the knives?” he asked.
“Oh yeah, all the time,” Hunk said. Proudly, he pulled a band-aid out with a dramatic flourish and turned to Keith with a tender smile. “Doesn’t happen so much now that I’m used to Altean knives, but it happens.” He reached back out for Keith’s hand and he gave it to him with far less hesitation. Humming along to the soft music in the background, Hunk gently wrapped the bandage around Keith’s thumb and applied pressure to make sure it would stick.
“Thanks…” Keith said, flexing his thumb and frowning at the sticky adhesive pulling at his skin.
“One more thing,” Hunk said brightly. Keith had barely turned to face him before Hunk had leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead. Keith froze and his fingers reached to brush the spot Hunk had kissed.
“...what?” he said, aghast. Hunk’s smile softened.
“My mom used to do that for me after I got a cut or something,” he said fondly. “Since we’re all like...one giant space family up here, I’d figured I’d keep the tradition alive. Or...was that too much?”
Keith’s lips twitched. He felt a warm feeling blossoming in his chest and he turned to look down at the teal band-aid wrapped around his thumb. He glanced back at Hunk and shook his head.
“It was fine.”
Hunk beamed. “Great. Now give me the knife so I can clean it. I’m going to try and take a crack at this lettuce.” He rolled up his sleeves as he spoke, trying to sound confident but failing to hide the apprehension in his expression when he looked at the enormous leaves.
“I’ll keep an eye on the corn,” Keith said, stepping aside to let Hunk take over. He leaned his hip against the counter, watching as Hunk rinsed off the knife and tried to look threatening as he brandished it and leaned down to tame the leaves into something he could cut. Keith watched as he worked, silently mulling Hunk’s words over in his head.
Family.
Keith hadn’t had one of those in a very long time. Not since his dad had died. Not since his mom had left before he’d even known what she looked like. And while Shiro was basically his brother by bond but not by blood, it was always just the two of them. Now there were so many of them - one huge family up in space together trying to make the most of their lives.
So, while Hunk awkwardly sliced apart the enormous head of lettuce (they would probably have leftovers for weeks after this) Keith let himself smile a true, genuine smile.
“Hey, Hunk?” he spoke.
Hunk let his war on the lettuce pause for just a moment so he could turn his head to see Keith. “Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
The enormous grin that spread across Hunk’s face spoke more than words ever would.
If it. Hasn't been requested yet, could I see keith or lance (or both) with vehicular accident?
Do the Lions count as vehicles? I mean, I guess technically but still.
Eh, whatever. They count in this case.
Enjoy!

Snippet:
After a few seconds, Keith opened the door, rubbing the back of his head and yawning. His eyebrows lifted at the sight of Lance, standing fully-dressed at the space-equivalent of four in the morning.
“Lance?” Keith’s voice was groggy and annoyed. “What are you doing?
There was another surge of presence down the mental link with Red and Lance winced.
“I need your help,” he said plainly.
“Can it wait for the morning?” Keith grumbled.
“We’ve got training in the morning,” Lance crossed his arms over his chest. “And I refuse to spend another night before 6 AM training with new-strict Shiro tossing and turning because Red won’t stop purring.”
Hunk first met Lance when he was just shy of seven years old.
A new family had just moved in across the street. A large one with more people inside then Hunk had fingers. His mom had cooked up a batch of her famous snickerdoodle cookies to help chase away the December cold and went to greet the new neighbors. Hunk had accompanied, half because his mom’s cookies rivaled none, and half because he wanted to meet the new family.
Despite only being there a day at most, the snow-covered front lawn was already practically a disaster zone. Half-built snowmen were everywhere, including a fort on either side of the yard. They had clearly tried to build an igloo, too, but it was too small and cramped for even one person to fit inside.
Hunk gripped his mother’s gloved hand tightly in his own while his dad went to ring the doorbell. He could feel his heart pounding in his ears. He’d never done too well around new people. And despite his curiosity, Hunk was starting to think maybe he was better off back at home at his house, curled up under his duvet with his favorite picture book.
Before he could even chicken out, the door creaked open. A tired-looking woman answered the door, glancing curiously at the little family gathered on her doorstep.
She didn’t look mean, Hunk decided, half-hiding behind his mom’s leg. She had smile wrinkles around her eyes and was wearing a flour-stained apron. She looked more confused if anything.
“Hello,” she said. She had a thick accent Hunk had never heard before. “How can I help you?”
“Mrs. McClain, right?” Hunk’s mom asked. She took a few steps forward to shake the woman’s hand and Hunk had no choice but to follow, practically glued to her leg. “We’re your neighbors. We live just across the street.”
The woman’s expression cleared. “The Garrett family, right?”
“Yes,” said Hunk’s dad. “We thought we’d welcome you to the neighborhood!”
“Oh,” Mrs. McClain blinked once but then caught sight of Hunk huddled to his mom’s leg. Her expression went soft like his mom’s sometimes did when Hunk did something funny. “And who might you be?”
Hunk pressed his forehead into his mom’s leg, fisting his hands into her jeans. She looked down at him with a reassuring smile.
“I-I’m Hunk,” Hunk murmured.
“Hunk,” Mrs. McClain repeated.
“He’s our son,” Hunk’s dad said. “He wanted to come along to say hello.”
Mrs. McClain looked at Hunk and gave him a smile. The same ones his parents liked to give to reassure him he wasn’t in trouble. Tentatively, Hunk returned it..
“Why don’t you come inside and out of the cold?” She asked. “I have a son around Hunk’s age. I think the two of them might get along.” As she spoke, Mrs. McClain stepped back to allow the door to open wider. Hunk’s parents took that as a sign to come in and they gently coaxed Hunk with them through the front door. It was graciously warm compared to outside.
Swiveling his head around, Hunk took in the house. It was a mess of boxes - some of them opened but most of them were still sealed shut - and clothes somehow strewn everywhere. Mrs. McClain made a face when she saw a stray pair of jeans and scooped them up off of the ground.
“I’m sorry about the mess,” she said with a sheepish smile.
“It’s no problem,” Hunk’s mom said. “You just moved.”
Suddenly, there was a tromp of loud footsteps and even louder voices, all coming down the stairs just by the kitchen. Hunk flinched back, going back to hiding behind his mom’s leg as several kids came charging down the stairs and all shouting at each other in a language Hunk was unfamiliar with. They seemed to be arguing with one smaller boy leaping up to grab a blanket wrapped in a tight ball held above one of the two older one’s head.
“Mama!” the small boy whined. “Tell Luis to give it back!”
Mrs. McClain sighed heavily and gave one of the two taller boys a meaningful look. They both mumbled under their breath and reluctantly handed their brother his blanket back. Then with gleeful, shrieking laughter, they darted back upstairs.
The boy hugged his reclaimed blanket to his chest and unraveled it to drape it over his shoulders. It was baby blue and looked soft to the touch, despite being incredibly wrinkled. The boy looked glad to have it back and turned a curious gaze to Hunk and his parents standing in the entryway.
Mrs. McClain set her hand on her son’s shoulder. “Lance,” she spoke. “This is Hunk. He’s our new neighbor.”
“New...neighbor?” Lance repeated, staring hard at Hunk. He shrank back behind his mom a little more. He paused and then bounded forward with an excited gleam in his eyes. “How old are you?”
“Six,” Hunk held up the corresponding fingers. “But I turn seven next month!”
“I’m six too!” Lance said excitedly. “But I don’t turn seven ’till a lot into the new year!”
“Wow!” Hunk said brightly. He could feel himself growing more relaxed, more sure of himself. Carefully, he stepped away from his mom’s leg. “Do you have brothers and sisters?”
“Mhm, lots!” Lance said, nodding his head as fast as he could. “There’s Marco, and Luis, and Veronica, and Rachel! And there’s more but they’re not home right now. They’re out with Papa to get stuff for our new house!” He paused and then looked around Hunk’s parents for some invisible person. “Do you have brothers and sisters?”
Hunk shook his head. “Uh-uh.”
“That’s okay!” Lance said brightly. He reached out faster than Hunk could follow and took Hunk’s gloved hands into his own. “We’ll be brothers from now own!”
Hunk could feel his heart swelling with happiness. The excitement sparkling in Lance’s eyes was contagious. He squeezed Lance’s hands in his own and the other boy practically beamed.
“Do you like video games?” He asked.
Hunk’s whole expression lit up. “Do I?!”
“I’ve got a whole bunch! Come on!” Lance gestured for Hunk to follow him up the stairs. He was practically vibrating with excitement, rocking back and forth on his heels at the foot of the stairs. Hunk made to follow and then hesitating, looking up at his mom and asking for silent permission.
“Go on,” his mother encouraged with a soft smile.
“Okay!” Hunk stripped out of his heavy winter coat and gloves and let his dad take them from him. “Let’s go!”
Lance cheered and took Hunk’s hand, practically dragging him up the stairs to his room. Their parents watched after them, shaking their heads at just how easily the two of them had clicked.
Needless to say, Hunk had the first sleepover of his life at Lance’s house that night. And that was just the first of many to come.
