Attendance Statistics 2013/14
An article by Chris Morrish.
I started recording our home and away attendances during the 2009/10 season, which just so happened to be our first season back in the Football League following our relegation to the non-league in 2007. Having suffered the same fate this summer, it is a good time to pause and reflect on the five years we spent as a Football League side.
The full list of all the home attendances and away followings for each game of our five year spell in League Two can be viewed online at: www.torquayfans.com/attendances
As a disclaimer, some figures included are estimates, as not all sides publish the home/away split for each game. To my knowledge, all the other stated figures are correct.
Looking forward, next season in the Conference we will travel 10 084.8 miles to complete our 23 league fixtures. As a side note, this is nearly identical to how far we would theoretically have travelled were we still in league two, and is approximately a 7% rise from last season.
Nevertheless, we can be encouraged that the last time we dropped out of the league, our average attendance in the Conference was over 3000. Even with reduced away followings visiting Plainmoor and a lower standard of football, crowds will come to see a Torquay United side winning games and challenging at the right end of the table.
To help put these numbers into context, in the 2009/10 season we finished in 17th position, and in the four following years finished 7th, 5th, 19th and 24th respectively.
