Finally finished the slowest Don Giovanni in history. It's like Klemperer and Christa Ludwig made a bet about just how slowly she could sing "Mi tradi" without dying.

The beautiful song Stephan Jänicke (Anton von Lucke) translates for his deaf parents in S1E3 of Babylon Berlin, the magnificent German TV series (definitely up there with my favorite scenes of the whole show). The lyrics, based on a poem by Friedrich Rückert, in German and English below. Performed by the legendary German mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig with the Philharmonia Orchestra.

RIP legendary German mezzo Christa Ludwig

Christa Ludwig (1928-2021), who had one of the loveliest mezzo-sopranos ever, sings the loveliest of Mahler --  "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen,” Rückert-Lieder, no.4 -- with Klemperer conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra.

I was too young to hear her live -- she retired a couple years after I started learning the Lied and following opera -- but she made plenty of superb recordings, and I can conjure up her voice in my head (especially for Mahler).
