Introducing someone to your religion when they are at the darkest and lowest point in their life is inherently coercive and I’m never going to change my mind on that. It is a cult tactic to find people who are struggling and try to convert them, and the Christian church doing it instead of Scientology or something does not make that practice any less fucked up. Christianity can be a normal and healthy part of someone’s life, but if you have to introduce it to them in a coercive and predatory way, it’s probably not going to be that.

In the 900s, when King Harald Bluetooth converted to Christianity, he was met with by a bunch of his jarls, who spent time convincing him that this Christ wasn’t that powerful and their gods were much more powerful, describing miraculous acts by Odin, Freyr and other gods as evidence.

In return, Bluetooth deployed a Christian priest who countered that no other gods existed than Christ. But rather than the standard “all other gods are actually demons” argument, he just told them that all other miraculous acts were actually all committed by trolls.

I would *really* love to have better records of this conversation. The jarls were, reportedly, unconvinced.

Growing up jewish has made me really sensitive to Christian coercive conversion tactics. And it’s really useful for me because I’m also gay and trans. Like, I realized way before I came out that sometimes

I’ll pray for you = what you are doing is immoral and disgusting, I hope you change

Love the sinner hate the sin = I will only love you if you behave in the ways that my interpretation of Christianity allows.

You can still be saved = it’s not too late for you to force yourself to abandon your way of life and live in misery for the sake of my comfort.

God bless your heart = fuck you, you little shit

And if they say any of these things in response to you being rude or insulting to them (which is usually warranted) it means

Fuck you, also, I’m better than you.
