Katharine Hepburn drunk and snorting are worth the price of admission but add in Mid century tilework, laminate and understated office furniture, cleaver Tracy / Hepburn back and forth dialogue...It’s one of my favorite Christm-ish movies. Shot in Animorphic, Cinima Scope, The sets are so exaggerated in length to accommodate the lens and all of them are 3wall stage design style. Bunny’s one bedroom apartment at 75th St just off Lexington, though long, still feels appropriate small with the working fireplace, tiny kitchen and bath. Only louvered doors separate the small bedroom from the living space keeping it open and in view during the dinner scene. The dining table placed right in the center of the walkway helps to make it feel smaller still. I love the eclectic artwork, the stacks of books with notes by her bed and the pile of wrapped gifts by her desk. The super long reference department office feels large for three desks but the space is needed later for EMERAC (Electromagnetic MEmory and Research Arithmetical Calculator) I could go on. The chemistry between Hepburn and Tracy is magic as always and the dialogue is quick and witty and smart.
