Want to learn how to write speculative fiction that sells? Consider applying for one of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction’s summer spec-fic workshops! We’ll help you master the elements that create great short, novel-length, and YA fiction.
* We’re pleased to announce that Special Guest Author for Week Two of this year’s Speculative Fiction Writing Workshop is one of the founders of Cyberpunk and a Center alum: Pat Cadigan! SF Grand Master James Gunn plans to join us for part of Week One. Chris McKitterick (that’s me!) leads the workshop and participates throughout both weeks. It already has a good pool of applicants, and will likely fill in the next few weeks, so apply soon. Full details here: X
* Multiple award-winning author Kij Johnson is now taking applications for her SF/F/H Novel Writing Workshop. If you hope to work with Kij this year, apply (very) soon - only a few days left for first-wave acceptance into her workshop!
* Tina Connolly’s Young Adult Writing Workshop is open for applications, too! Learn how to succeed in this blossoming subgenre from one of its brilliant practitioners.
* Are you an alum of our workshops and want to come back, but want a more laid-back experience? McKitterick and Johnson also offer “Repeat Offenders” advanced workshops for those who’ve worked with us before. Learn more on each of the traditional workshop pages.
Thanks to the generosity of an alum and friend of the Center, we are again pleased to offer the Mark Bourne Speculative Fiction Writing Scholarship to help 1-4 outstanding spec-fic writers attend Johnson’s SF&F Novel Writing Workshop or McKitterick’s Speculative Fiction Writing Workshop, or one of the Repeat Offenders workshops. The scholarship comes in the form of a waiver of part or all of the not-for-credit workshop registration fee, or a monetary award to help cover KU fees for enrolling for-credit. This scholarship is intended to enable writers to attend one of the Center’s writing workshops who might not otherwise be able to afford it. The donor (Elizabeth Bourne, an alum of the summer program) hopes to “help more writers attend the workshops and benefit from the world-class instructors they attract.” The scholarship is established in Mark’s name to honor a man who dedicated his life to speculative fiction. See the Center’s website for more details and how to apply after you are accepted into one of the workshops.
Workshop attendees receive complimentary membership to the Campbell Conference that takes place between the traditional and Repeat Offenders versions of the workshops, where you can meet scholars and professionals in the SF field. We’ll soon have news about this year’s event, but here’s last year’s Conference page to give you an idea: X
Hope to see you this summer. Ad astra!
