Lecture 12: On the Ecology and Biology of the Chromalisk
Many strange kinds of creatures call the planet of Cradle home. There are beasts, mechanical monstrosities, ghostly beings, and various forms of undead, to name a few. Each one has its own tricks in order to survive and best adventurers like the Spiral Knights, and our topic of discussion today is one of the trickiest kinds of monster there is: the Chromalisk!
Don’t let its cute looks fool you! It’s a ruse! YES, A RUSE!
Similar in build, if not size to a chameleon, the Chromalisk is an oddity among the creatures of Cradle. Equally at home on the surface of Cradle as in the Clockworks, the Chromalisk emerges from the Clockworks during the day to hunt and let their whelps play, before returning underground at dusk. I guess you could say they work the night shift at home!
The Chromalisk has evolved a plethora of special traits to help it make the most of its situation. Using its long, sticky tongue, the Chromalisk is able to capture insects easily to eat, as well as attacking foes like the Spiral Knights or us adventurers in general. In addition to their tongue, a Chromalisk has another option for attacking at range: spitting out mildly poisonous saliva!
Other than that, the Chromalisk is a very mobile, wily creature to make up for its lack of offensive power. Its cute little orange feet allow it to easily climb trees or machinery, while its tail is ideal for balance and acting as a fifth limb. They’re very agile, able to dodge projectiles as well. The Chromalisk has got extremely advanced camouflage, too, and that’s what’s really worth talking about!
A Tier 2 and a Tier 3 Chromalisk. You’ll know them by their stripes!
That camouflage is the Chromalisk’s greatest defense and its most useful weapon. As opposed to merely changing colors in broad strokes like a chameleon, the Chromalisk is able to turn completely invisible! Every one of a Chromalisk’s cells is able to turn transparent, like glass or gelatin. Other than perhaps a glimmering ripple in the air or the sound of their movements, it’s very difficult to detect a Chromalisk in this state.
It’s not impossible, however. When fighting a Chromalisk, rely on your other senses besides your sight in order to keep track of them while they’ve turned invisible. If your vision is good enough, you can also detect a distortion in the shape of their general outline! Make sure to exploit their weakness to ice, but avoid their resistance to fire and poison. With all that in mind, happy hunting!
Juuust trying to blend in.
