Shelley was 'accidentally' put into a girls-only cabin the first time she went to Camp Heart as a young camper. That's how she met the other councilors! They didn't care that she was a 'boy'. Those other campers are jerks, you can stay here with us! We won't break your glasses for being 'girly'. You wanna paint each other's nails?

Might as well bite the fuckin bullet for this one. We know only the name of ONE of the counselors' names (That one being the 'Cool Counselor' with her name being Billie which I have a feeling is some kind of reference to Billie Eilish especially with the horror material in her debut album, 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?'). What about the names of the others? (Especially the 'Cute Counselor' which I'm more than willing to bet is named something somewhat southern like Millie or Bella)
Billie is actually named after Billy Loomis, one half of Ghostface in Scream (1996)! Her full name is Billie Prescott - her surname being that of the final girl, Sidney Prescott.
Cute/Chef Counselor was originally supposed to be named "Betty", a female equivalent to "Bubba" aka Leatherface, but that was too close to Billie for me. I decided on Delilah Sawyer - "Delilah" after the famous American 90s radio DJ, and "Sawyer" being the surname of the family of cannibals from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)!
Shelley Torrence is a combination of Shelley Duvall and Jack Torrence, the 'final girl" and 'slasher' from The Shining (1980).
Jamie-Lee Myers is, likewise, just a combination of Jamie-Lee Curtis and Micheal Myers from Halloween (1978).
