@chthonianspite because figure it might lead to a bit of bonding:
Sometimes Ludger forgot just how strong-willed his young partner could be.
Wingul and Gaius had been discussing Gaius’ undercover work when the two of them came to visit. Nothing out of the ordinary until Elle piped in to tell Gaius at length that he was wrong to pretend to be ‘Erston’ as good kings weren’t supposed to lie. And she was relentless-- Elle brought up the incident at Duval where Gaius was apparently so mean he got called the “Demon of the Alleyway”, the ‘goofing off’ with the shady guys in Tanner’s gang, the overly long list went on. But what was even worse was interrupting Elle-- which Wingul tried to do.
“Hey, you’re not supposed to interrupt someone when they’re talking!” Elle immediately shut down Wingul’s attempt to get back on topic. “And you were wrong too! As the king’s helper, you’re supposed to make sure the king’s being good!” Oh boy, she was preparing a second lecture. Meaning it was time for him to step in.
“Elle! Impromptu partner meeting! Now!” That caught Elle’s attention, leading her back to his side instead of up in Gaius’ face. “Have you ever told any lies to help make things better?”
“Yeah, I lied to Daddy before about believing in the Hat Spirit so I didn’t hurt his feelings. Why?”
“Think of what Gaius is doing like what you did with your daddy then. He’s lying about who he is so he can learn to be a better king for everybody. Okay?” Elle nodded back. “Good. So go apologize to Gaius for yelling at him.”
That solved one matter at least. Ludger let Elle do what she needed and addressed Elle’s second victim in her sudden, overly long rant. “Sorry Elle interrupted the conversation. She’s the type of person who feels she has to express her opinion on everything, even when the situation doesn’t call for it.” Ludger liked to see Elle had confidence in herself, but honestly one of these days she was going to get more than just herself into a heap of trouble for it. This one time though, he would let it slide... for multiple reasons.
“But I have a feeling you’ll forgive her. It was kind of fun to watch Gaius get yelled at.” Don’t think Ludger didn’t catch that smile or bit of laughter amidst Elle’s very loud yelling.
