at this point in love and redemption, it's clear that the main message is about how women are controlled by patriarchal societies and abusive men. linglong has her soul stolen and placed into a new body without any memories so that wu tong can shape her into his perfect "doll" (his phrasing) that sure has personality and sass but only within the confines of what he permits. xuanji is stalked 24/7 by hao chen who consistently manipulates her to deny her emotions and relationships, and for her to place serving him above all (in a double way; protecting the secret ground in the mortal world, returning to be the god of war in the heavenly realm). hao chen is infuriated by her defiance. the other sects all work to reaffirm this structure either by ignoring the abuse (tianxi hall) or supporting it (4 sect leaders). and this is a great theme because ideally the girls will overthrow both their abusers and destroy the system.

watch love & redemption solely for the annoying second female lead to go through so much character development that her arc ends with her yelling at god hard enough to save the world

having to admit that i found linglong and minyan very boring at first but now i LOVE them because they are both so morally grey, traumatised, fucked up and flawed. yes let's take the funny romcom couple and give them a corruption arc where they both still love each other but their love has doomed each other. give me a woman with PTSD flashbacks. give me an arrogant man who makes stupid mistakes and then faces appropriate punishment. eating it like popcorn rn
