it’s not so much that I think Chuck is a bad villain, but I cannot stand the impact his presence has had on fandom discussion of the show. You cannot ascribe all the bad things characters (usually Dean) do to Chuck’s “meddling” but then insist all of Dean’s good qualities are entirely his own. Do these characters have the capacity to make decisions - good and bad - or not? Do they have the ability to be good and bad people, or not?
And also if you’re reading spn this way, there is essentially no point in doing any sort of character analysis. Like it argues a complete and total lack of agency on the part of the characters, right down to the way they treat other characters on the show. I think it’s fine to argue that Chuck’s presence in the narrative pushes the characters into dangerous, volatile, and uncomfortable situations, but once you start saying that all criticism of the characters’ behaviour should be discarded because “Chuck made them do it”, then we’re talking about playhouse barbie dolls, not characters with internal lives & flaws & goals

I know this is too high of an expectation for Supernatural, but they definitely should have made it clearer what Chuck could/couldn't alter. Was he actually changing their thoughts and actions or was he only able to put obstacles in their place to thwart their thoughts/actions?
the ambiguity around the extent of his influence is definitely a big factor in the way people use Chuck as an explanation for shit that happens in the show, yeah. but honestly even if the show had been crystal clear on what Chuck does and doesn’t do, I still think people would use him as a scapegoat for stuff they don’t like in the show or behaviour they consider to be OOC.
and again like, why even interpret the show that way at all? like isn’t that is a horrifically depressing and hopeless way to think about spn? the characters aren’t even responsible for the way they treat their closest friends and family? those aren’t even characters those are playhouse dolls! it’s like the most nihilistic way to think about the show I could possibly imagine. like it argues that literally nothing the characters do “matters”, that you cannot judge the characters based on their own actions. and people want to have their cake and eat it too with this interpretation - all the bad things dean does (or rather, all the bad things he does that I personally don’t like) are because of chuck, but all the good things he does are entirely within his control and speak to his moral character.
and obviously you can complain about writing decisions you don’t like, that’s absolutely fair game and I do it all the time, but reaching for this bizarre in-universe explanation where actually I can just dismiss all these bad things as “this One Guy over here is secretly responsible” feels like a massive cop-out and is very intellectually lazy. which again, you don’t need to have high falutin academic opinions about a stupid cable tv show, but the “chuck is my single explanatory variable for all the things I don’t like on spn” position is so often presented as Serious Meta Analysis when really all it is is “I don’t like this thing a character did so it’s actually this other guy’s fault it happened”
