Whenever a musician from the vintage #soulmusic or #rhythmNblues world passes away, i do my best to honor their memory, because i want to make sure to acknowledge that their identity, music, message, & lives matter so much to me. The importance of this ritual is underlined to me every time a white rock'n'roll icon passes away. My news feed is always wallpapered with memorials to those artists, while the passing of Black artists of the same era so rarely ever makes it to my news feed or to mainstream news. . Tonight at Club Nitty Gritty, along with all of the fun dancing we're gonna do, we will bid farewell to two recently departed soul men. . #TheDells were easily one of the most significant vocal groups of all time, not to mention one of the most enduring. We recently lost Dells bass vocalist #ChuckBarksdale, whose style was imitated for decades. [ think of all those spoken bass monologues in the Boyz II Men records of the 1990s] . #TheMadLads were Memphis hometown heroes, and you would be challenged to find a tenor vocalist as sweet as Mad Lads founder #JohnGaryWilliams, who passed away this week. . The Dells were my technical advisers on THE FIVE HEARTBEATS.The real stuff in the film about the music industry came from them and Chuck shared with me so honestly,the good,the bad and the ugly of the music business.
