Today we remember an internationally-known artist who will forever be part of New York. Chuck Close began making large-scale portraits of friends and family in the 1960s. His permanent installation at 86 St station on the #secondavenuesubway, “Subway Portraits” (2017), is based on the artist’s painstakingly detailed photo-based portrait paintings. Ten portraits and two self-portraits, fabricated by @instamosaika and @magnoliaeditions in mosaic and ceramic tile, depict various painting techniques that Close utilized during his impressive career nearly six decades long. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/19/arts/design/chuck-close-artist-of-outsized-reality-dies-at-81.html Photo credit: @Osheen @estophoto, Jeff Goldberg
