Chuen / Monkey / Artisan
Today is the first day of a new 13-day Maya cycle -- 1 Chuen (B’atz in Aztec). Chuen represents the deity that created the earth and sky, the Maker and Modeler. In some Maya traditions, it is actually Chuen rather than Imix (crocodile) that begins the count of days. This day sign represents the energy that directed the first wise ones to form all of humanity. Chuen signifies the 260-day gestation period of the womb, and mirrors the cycles of Venus. Planetary movements is likened to the intricate process of weaving the tapestry of the Universe in Maya legend. The underworld, Xib’alb’a, is thought to be the unwoven bits -- a disordered tangle waiting to be created. Maya legend links the creative spirit of Chuen to monkeys, who, as the story goes, were originally two half-brothers of the hero-twins transformed as punishment for mistreating their brethren. The story of Chuen mirrors the dual-nature of people as capable of order and mayhem, and is symbolic of the cycle of Mars who periodically retreats in shame every retrograde. Despite its association with mischief, Chuen days are considered auspicious for marriage or any kind of artistic beginnings. A Chuen period, like the one we are entering, is good for performance and artistry but is generally marked by political posturing and grandstanding.
