Cryptid of the Day: Chum-Chum
Description: Why is it called Chum-Chum? No one knows. But sightings of this Maine Bigfoot have been recorded since the 1800′s, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that the creature got its name. One man, Dick Perkins, claims to have photographed footprints.

The creamy, the moreish; the Chum-Chum.
JUL 31 2012: Chum-Chum [noun]. Defined by the great Wikipedia as:
"A traditional Bengali sweet that is popular in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. It comes in a variety of colours, mainly light pink, light yellow and white...[and] it is also coated with coconut as a garnish."
This does absolutely no justice to what chum-chum's actually taste like! What got me hooked is the creamy, spongy texture. When made just right, it usually makes that satisfying squidgy sound when you sink your teeth into them.
Chum-chum's are traditionally made in a cylinder shape but my ol' dear likes to make them in the shape of a tear drop.
She's convinced me it tastes better because of it. =]
So that is how I'll be making them too.
There's very few steps to making chum-chum, which makes it one of the fastest Asian sweets to dish out. And depending on how much suger is used to make these puppies, it need not be so calorific either.
[I say this more to convince myself than you!]
Making the curd was fascinating, in fact, I might even dedicate a whole post to milk - watch this space. It's amazing all the different things you can do to milk and all the wonderful things you get out of it. Cream. Butter. Cheese. Yogurt.
Yum!
A lot of people add food colouring to make it look more 'fancy' - personally, I like the original off-white colour.
That's not to say that in my future experiments I won't use organic food colours to give the chum-chum's a bit of a personality. I might even go a little crazy and make them in heart shapes or even....jelly beans! endlesspossibilities.com!
But for now creamy white, drop-shaped squidgy mouth-watering chum-chums will suffice. =]
