"Why do you smoke so much?"

A stupid question as he stares unseeing at passerby. The wind hits just right and he wrinkles his nose. His head feels like a giant hand has a vice grip around his temples and any second they're going to squeeze too hard. Jack thinks it might help. It might feel better if it did crush his skull.

"Does it help?" Help what, he doesn't elaborate. There's a lot of things he could mean. Life in general, maybe. Jack doesn't think cigarettes could put all the jigsaw puzzle memories back into the damaged box of his mind. But if it could, he'd take the out. He'd take it like a drowning man would a life raft.

It's 3am and maybe she's awake splashing cold water on her face, but she's fine god dammit. That's the first thing that comes to mind as she stares at herself in the bathroom mirror. It's cold because the cabin doesn't really have much of a heating system, save for the fire place, and that petered out sometime between snores. Not for the first time she has to wonder what the hell she's doing out here.

Her mother would tell her she's being reckless. You barely know how to wipe your own ass, but you think he's your future? She cringes at her reflection, glancing back the way she'd come. Well, her mother hadn't survived terrorist, had she? She hadn't endured bullet wounds and torture; that was all on Meryl and if it brought her closer to him...

Another cringe as she hears the tell tale sign of creaking floorboards. Likely for her benefit, and wasn't that just great? She's not glass.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you." Meryl crosses her arms over her chest. "You didn't have to come check on me."
