“Well...” He glanced at the ticket in his hand. “Regardless, sir, I'm going to need you to step out of the vehicle and walk in a straight line for me.” “Is that really necessary, officer?" Beyond seemed to catch his skeptical tone, and pushed against the demand. “I’m completely sober you know, and I already got a ticket for my mistake.” He said calmly, eyes boring into the officers badge. “Can't you test me in a different way? Don't you have one of those breathalyzer things?” “We weren't issued one, ” the officer reluctantly admitted, gaze darting behind him as another rare car sped by. He leaned in conspiratorially, “truth is, we've got a situation tonight. The checkpoint isn't for impaired drivers because the higher ups say there is a suspect in a case on the loose, for a kidnapping case. Probably nothing, but we’re checking cars.” So L was looking for them. Relief hit him so suddenly his shoulders nearly sagged with it. If the police were aware of a serial killer, then this was Mello’s chance to fight back.
