Danny the Donkey is a piñata created for the art exhibition Cinco De Mayhem, a spoof on the “Mexican holiday” Cinco De Mayo. The show consists of artist created piñatas that may or may not be destroyed by the audience. The intention of Negative Jam’s piece, Danny the Donkey is to function as a representation of the actual relationship between America and Mexico. Cinco De Mayo is a holiday believed to be a product of Mexican culture, but in reality it is a day that is mostly celebrated in the United States.
This disconnected view held by many Americans can be paralleled with the perception of Mexican/American relations. The affiliation between these two countries is distorted and often whitewashed by activities like Cinco De Mayo parties, and other parts of Mexican culture that has seeped into American popular culture. Danny the Donkey addresses the ludicrous nature of American’s perception of the relationship between these two bordering nations.
