Izzy Maine loses it Weigh in: should we #CancelIzzy??

A video of comedian Izzy Maine, 33, pouring scalding hot coffee on TikTok personality Esme Bennet (@its_esmayyyyyy), 20, has gone viral — with the hashtag #CancelIzzy trending as well.

The video, which seems to take place at a brunch gathering held at Bennet’s house in Los Angeles, showcases the comedian angrily storming up to Bennet and purposefully dumping a carton of coffee onto the influencer and nearby guests, including Maine’s husband of three years, comedian Grant Dayton, 35. 

Dayton and Maine are both alumni of Saturday Night Live, who left the sketch comedy show to pursue their own projects. Before the Writer’s Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes, the pair were working on a new comedy series for Netflix, with Maine showrunning and Dayton executive-producing and starring. 

Many of Bennet’s fans are rallying on social media, calling for Netflix to cancel Maine’s show.

Izzy Maine’s catastrophic fall from grace In the aftermath of the comedian’s explosive outburst, more women are coming forward with stories of Maine’s volatile behavior 

Excerpt: 

“One time during a writer’s meeting, she got so mad that she grabbed a tray of bagels and flung it onto the table,” says a writer’s assistant, who prefers to remain anonymous. “Gobs of cream cheese got everywhere. I had to leave the room crying, I was so scared. The smell of lox wouldn’t leave my hair for days.”

When asked about the bagel incident, a representative of Maine’s provided this statement: 

“It’s true that Izzy often gets passionate in the writer’s room, because she wants the best from her team. This claim however completely misconstrues what happened, which was simply a clumsy dining accident that occurred when Izzy was vehemently gesturing.”

The representative went on to say that Maine paid for the entire team’s laundry and dry-cleaning.

Multiple Netflix projects scrapped; streamer cites creative differences 

Excerpt: 

Netflix officially pulled the plug on at least 12 different shows and movies in development, citing new directions and creative differences between the talent involved. This coincides with the end of the 148-day Writers Guild of America strike, and the ongoing Screen Actors Guild strike.

The canceled projects run a wide gamut from Love is Blind: Avalor, the long-rumored biopic of Ingary’s Madame Sulliman, and comedian Izzy Maine’s highly anticipated sitcom. Considering the other changes at Netflix, specifically the price plan and introduction of an ad-tier, it seems like the streamer is pivoting to a new direction.

TikTok influencer coffee spill and bagel tray flinging aside, Izzy Maine was just never funny and it’s time we admit that. 

I don’t mean to be the type of person who brags about not liking something cool, but I never got Izzy Maine’s whole schtick. Didn’t we leave behind that whole “not like other girls, rah-rah I like pizza and beer and hate motherhood” deal behind in 2013? None of her standup clips have ever made me laugh. 

I’m not alone. Earlier this year, an audio clip from one of Maine’s standups went viral — but for reasons I’m sure Izzy Maine would hate. It’s a clip from one of her standups, where she brags about being the type of woman who doesn’t wear makeup. It became a meme, with plenty of empowered young women, proudly showing off their makeup routines and outright mocking Maine’s words.

Here’s the thing: I always promised I’d be honest with y’all.

And for the most part, I have been. Back when I started this blog, I was a naive Vanderbilt kid who was obsessed with falling in love and was super insecure about her giant feet and horrible acne. I told y’all a lot of stuff I never even told my therapist, like all the long-term trauma from my parents’ divorce and my stepdad dying. And then I met Charlie and got my happily ever after and I was honest about the stress of wedding planning and the hard truths about pregnancy when I had Harlynne and Jaxson, because even though I love them it’s definitely not easy. I never wanted to be one of those moms who acted like they were perfect. That’s what the “ugly” lifestyle is all about. Even as an adult, I’ve been bullied and made to feel bad for the things I have and the life I lead. People have made fun of me for getting work done on my nose even though it was medically necessary. People have called my accent fake when I’ve literally lived in Nashville for the past ten years. And– anyway, I’m not gonna get all mad about it, I’ve made my peace with things and that’s not what this live is about anyway.

But I haven’t been completely honest. There’s something I haven’t talked about a lot. But at this point, it’s pretty much unavoidable, so here it is: Charlie and I are getting a divorce.

I know this is gonna be disappointing for some people, and it probably seems like it came out of nowhere, but we’ve had issues for a long time. And I really wanted to work through them. I tried. There are some things I can’t forgive, though, and sleeping with another woman is one of them. Not to air anyone’s dirty laundry, obviously, but y’all deserve the truth.

So anyway, that’s happening. And I’m moving back to my hometown, because I’ve realized that I need to reconnect with my roots and figure out what’s next for me. This city just has too many memories associated with it and I think it’s time for a fresh start. And you know what? I’m not proud of the kid I was in high school. So there’s gonna be a lot of work I’m gonna have to do to fix those relationships, and I want all of you along for the ride. The gritty, ugly, hard process. But that’s what this is all about. I’m starting over, but one thing that won’t change is that I promise, as always, to keep it one hundred percent real. Love y’all. Signing off.

Though she didn’t know it at the time, Ella’s mother was a Magick - she kept it hidden, and none of her powers were passed onto her daughter, but it certainly impacted the little girl’s upbringing. Ella loved her mother more than life itself; she wasn’t very old when she died, but it’s a loss that she still carries with her today, heavy in her heart. But it wasn’t so bad - she still had her father, and their lovely little home in the South of England; close enough to London to still feel connected to the hustle and bustle of city life, but far enough away that their felt like their house was safe, tucked away and hidden from the danger and the darkness. Although, in the end, all of that was brought right onto her doorstep. Her father remarried (with her blessing - she only wanted him to be happy), and though they were different to her and to the life she’d known, Ella tried her best to be good to these people, her new family. Until it all came crashing down around her - blue flashing lights outside her window one night, and a policeman who was very sorry, but her father hadn’t made it.

And so, here she is. Her step-family moved her to Swynlake, to the grand estate that has too many rooms and not enough charm, where her step-mother can have everyone under her thumb. Thankfully, Ella doesn’t have to spend so much time in her presence - with any of them, for that matter. With a small loan from her step-mother, she opened her own little business: Rags and Bags. Cute little bags, unique items of clothing, and a little bit of seamstress work on the side; it might make her indebted to her step-mother, but it’s almost worth it to keep her out of their stupidly large home.

There was a time when the Charming family was among the most respected of the Order of the Prince. That is what Christopher Charming, Henry’s father, would always say, anyway. Something just changed over the decades. The Unseelie remained as dangerous and devious as ever, but public perception shifted, viewing the creatures as silly bedtime stories rather than real threats. And more and more, the Charmings became the butt of many well-known Order jokes. They were the softies, the posh, uppity Charmings who dusted off their fly swatters now and then for pest control.

If that wasn’t enough of a doozy of a legacy to grow into, it didn’t help much that, in Henry’s case, the stereotype was true. Compared to his practical and grounded older sisters, Henry was a space case, hiding out the secret nooks of his house to read books or write long love letters he would never send. As Henry neared his eighteenth birthday, his family worried constantly about the possibility that he might fail his hunt. It wasn’t unprecedented, after all. But for the Charming family, it would basically be the death knell for their reputation.

And then, miraculously, Henry passed. Despite his general aversion to violence, if there was one thing Henry knew how to do, it was study. So he treated the hunt like a school assignment, and when the time came, something vicious and strange emerged in Henry. He came face-to-face with a mara and killed her in cold blood and he didn’t even really feel bad about it. All that time he had spent psyching himself up for the hunt, convincing himself that he was just going to have to push through what a good and kind heart he thought he had… he hadn’t needed any of it. It was a relief, in fact, it was the proudest moment of his parents’ lives, but it didn’t make sense to Henry. Maybe he wasn’t quite the nice guy he had always believed he was.

But that was not a question to bring to his parents. Or even his sisters. Maybe it was a question for his long morning walks or his moonlight ponderings, but now that Henry was the golden child of the Charming family, he had to do everything he could to put on the appearance of a brave, noble Prince. With his Blood Hunt completed, Henry began university, but was told he would have to transfer schools after his first year because of an apparent Unseelie problem in Swynlake. He enrolled in Pride U, and he has spent all summer studying the town’s history with Unseelie. While he may not be able to escape his family’s reputation, he believes this will be a fresh start. Nobody knows dreaming, daft, head-in-the-clouds Henry Charming. But they do know of newly-minted Prince Henry Charming. And Henry is determined to keep it that way.
