The memory played through her mind like a band film. She recalled her blood going cold and her hands rattling as the gun shook in her hand. Never had she been this confused or this frightened. No blood trickled from his leg, only a hole in the pant leg where the bullet had hit him. He wasn’t wearing any protection on that area, it was all bare underneath. “How…” There had to be an explanation to all of this. For example, that red reflection she saw, she chalked up to being a distorted image from the filthy rusty steel, but what it didn’t explain as why the people who encounter him started screaming devil.
In fact that had been happening quite a bit as it happened during her encounter with Jimmy Barnes, and much as she wanted to say it was because he was mentally unstable, it wasn’t until after his encounter with Lucifer at the studio that he began to utter those words. Him and the others? It was too coincidental, but no matter how confusing or troubling everything was, Lucifer being the actual devil was utterly ridiculous.
But things kept getting weirder and Chloe was running out of plausible explanations, like how he could lift a man twice his size and toss him like a doll, or the strange red faces she saw in various reflections. She even unearthed some footage of him in the interrogation room and there she saw the red face and the burning red eyes. Chloe’s hand began to shake as she covered her mouth. Much as she wanted to believe the footage had been corrupted, it clearly wasn’t, and the audio of the man screaming devil haunted her.
She felt like she was going insane, like it was a conspiracy or some elaborate ruse. “I need air.” Chloe stepped out of the office and went outside, but not before grabbing cup of hot steaming coffee. Maybe she was working too many shifts with hardly any sleep, and Lucifer’s ramblings about being the devil were seeping into her subconscious, but the nagging thoughts wouldn’t leave her, and they screamed as loudly as Jimmy Barnes did behind that translucent barrier.
He’s the devil, he’s the devil!
