THIS IS ALL A FUCKING DISASTER.

Matilda let go of the bandages and scissors, the sound of metal against linoleum interrupting Jack. She gripped the sink tightly, knuckles going white. “And whose fault is that, Jack?” She turned to him, keeping the waver from her voice but she could feel the tears sting her eyes. Matilda blinked them away angrily. “Who decided to fall for their best friend’s girlfriend? Who the fuck thinks that’s a good idea?” It is harder to admit that it isn’t just Jack’s betrayal of Lucas, that it is everything else; it is harder to admit that she is tired of being cast aside in favor of Catalina. Because hadn’t she just been waiting for the other shoe to drop? Didn’t she know that eventually it would come to this? Lucas and Jack letting their friendship go to ruins; Matilda running after Jack to help him. Even while knowing he would never reciprocate her feelings, she finds herself here with Jack, wiping the blood away from the cuts on his cheek. She places a band-aid, smoothing it over Jack’s pale skin, lets it be just that; an act of friendship. Matilda being the support system Jack needs when he has little else. 

“I’m trying so hard to be on your side, do you know that? I’m here, with you, instead of back in my room with Lina, who’s just broken up with her boyfriend because he was acting out when he realized his best friend isn’t who he thought he was.” She wonders how she can still look at Jack when every time she does, something tightens around her heart, as if trying to squeeze out the affection she held for him. She wonders how she can still be in love with someone who refuses to look her way. “I want to be on your side, Jack, but how can I?”

YOU’RE JUST… SO, SO STUPID.

At his words, Matilda closes her eyes, taking a shaky breath. She had braced herself for impact, but found herself still surprised by how much it hurt. She’d imagined this scenario going a million ways, but never like this. In her head, she knew Jack better, thought that he would let her down easy, if he let her down at all. He sits in front of her, and she can’t even remember why she ever thought she could be in love with him. “Fuck you, Jack,” she finally replied, but her words do not match the tone of her voice. Mattie inhales deeply, reaching for the notebook she had pushed aside. She looks down at the lined paper, but the words blur through her tears. She blinks, and a wet drop lands on a diagram, the black ink bleeds as she uses her finger to wipe the water away. Matilda hopes he doesn’t notice but knows that he probably does. Before she can stop herself, “Is it Catalina?” There is almost no question about it, and she’s not even sure why she asks when she knows the answer. Matilda waits for a moment, for him to prove her wrong but she’s met with silence. Because of course it is Catalina, her perfect roommate, sweet, outgoing, and dating Jack’s best friend. She’s not sure how she ever convinced herself to attempt something with Jack when she’d always known he would never pick her. “Fuck you,” she says with more conviction because she knows her worth and she hates that she’s letting this affect any opinion she had about herself. “I thought you were my best friend. I thought that if this happened, that it might fucking suck if you didn’t feel the same way, but you’re my best friend and I thought you’d never do anything to hurt me. God.” Matilda looked up, exasperated and frustrated and, heartbroken. “But fuck that, right?” She gathered her things, shoved them hurriedly into her bag. “I have to go.” It isn’t until she gets to her room and hears the lock click that she finally lets the tears fall.

FUCK’S SAKE, WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM?

There is something to be said about finding something that was once beautiful in ruins. For a moment, Delilah wonders what the people who built the Colosseum would say if they saw it today. She would say the words if she knew. Flynn looks at her, and the landmarks are the same; his eyes still look like the color of grass when the sun shines, his hair still falls in his eyes, and, yep, his hand still reaches up to swipe it across his forehead. Delilah doesn’t know why she feels like she is navigating a new home, where she doesn’t know where the cups and plates are kept, and doesn’t know that the second step creaks and groans under the weight of a body. She’s never been this angry with him, and it makes him unrecognizable. “My problem?” She sputters in disbelief. “It’s not me with the problem here, you’re the idiot who thinks there’s something going on between me and Norton! We’re just friends! We’ve always been friends, and I don’t know where this is coming from so you tell me, Flynn.” It isn’t that he’s insinuating something between her and Shaggy; it’s that he thinks Delilah would ever look at any other boy the way she looks at Flynn. “So what, I’m not allowed to just be friends with guys now? Are you going to be that guy now, Flynn? Because I sure as hell am not gonna be that girl,” she said fiercely, and she knows, knows but doesn’t want to, that she is still soft for him. That if he strung his words correctly, she would be that girl. Delilah knows she’s at fault for deliberately flirting with Shaggy after Flynn was obviously uncomfortable with their friendship, but she was so angry with Flynn for thinking she would ever be unfaithful. Now here they were, standing in the ruins of something that was once beautiful. He was once beautiful to her; sometimes when he smiles, he still is. “I would have done anything for you, Flynn, but god, this? This is too much, even for you. If this is how it’s gonna be, then maybe,” she paused, wondered if this was something she was willing to let go of, “maybe it’s not fucking worth it anymore.”
