Review: CinemaFX - Create authentic movie stills
What does it do?
CinemaFX by Nexvio has 21 in-built filters designed to copy the post production techniques used on a range of popular films. There are also a number of basic editing options, which makes it a simple yet comprehensive photo editing app for film lovers.
Pros
By simply pinching and swiping with your fingertips you're able to zoom in and out as well as pan around the image, which makes it easier to see how certain portions respond to the filters and effects that you apply.
You can fine tune the effects by playing around with the little slider at the bottom of the screen, which lets you alter the filter's intensity. For many of the filters there's also a secondary slider that gives you even more freedom to change certain elements, like darken the sky, alter the saturation or add more blur.
The app has a very simple UI with a drop down menu containing all of the filters and the other necessary settings and options are around the edge of the screen.
There are 21 great effects in total, all of which have been designed to mimic the look and feel of big blockbusters. My personal favourites are Elf Glow and English Tea.
Elf Glow
Within the filter menu there are a range of other options, such as layering, altering rotation, cropping, changing the final resolution of the image and finally amending both the contrast and brightness.
Cons
You're only able to save your completed images to your photo album from within the app itself, you can't send on to social networks or even forward by email.
Although the app features some brilliant filters, a few others, such as Heat Vision, seem a little basic in comparison. However, the main focus of the app is to mimic the effects from popular films, so I suppose there had to be some less appealing ones thrown into the mix as well.
Do you need it?
I was a bit sceptical of CinemaFX at first because it was solely geared up to be a "movie still" app. However, I've been pleasantly surprised to find many good quality filters that really do mimic the look of some of my favorite films whilst still looking very authentic.
There are other apps that offer users with very similar effects, but for movie buffs it's a great one to download so that you have all of your favourite filters in one place.
For those who like recreating movies with these kinds of effects, then try CinemaFX for Video from the same developers.
