I have a theory and I’m starting with evidence before I tell you what it actually is. Here’s what we’ve got;

Mugglenet’s set visit of CoG reported them painting quite severe lashes on Ezra’s back

Ezra on the dvd extras of CoG said that credence had gone from one ‘intensely abusive’ situation to another by joining the circus

It’s also been reported by Yates and Rowling that the original script of CoG was ‘darker’ and had credence being mistreated much more ‘explicitly’

Credence’s shirt changed but I’m fairly sure he’s wearing the same trousers and waistcoat

Now’s the theoretical part;

Credence was with the circus for like 9 months, there’s NO WAY Skender did not know what and who he was... And surely he’d want to exploit that.

CONCLUSION: Skender beat Credence bc he refused to perform in the circus

“Nagini’s dress was too revealing”/“the circus master fetishized her”

EXACTLY - THAT IS THE POINT.

There’s a reason she’s dressed in revealing dress - it’s her performance dress she wears while transforming for audiences at the circus. There’s a reason Skender says “so beautiful, so desirable” etc.

The point is that a) Skender is a gross person who mistreats the acts at the circus, Nagini included, and b) she’s being sexualized for entertainment - on the contrary, we feel disgust at Skender/the circus and empathy for Nagini.

It would be like people complaining because racism is shown in “Roots” or “The Help” - it’s not shown as a good thing at all, it’s shown to shock audience members and make them empathize with the characters being mistreated.
