Jordan Clark, Lee Mai, & Abbie Springer of Cirque Louis were with us in the studio with us July 19. They will be performing at iroquois Amphitheatre on July 20 & 21 as a part of the Amphitheatre's 80th Birthday Celebration! Jordan Clark. After training on his own in high school, Jordan began his formal circus training in 2006 at the National Circus School of Montreal’s summer program. He was later accepted into the school’s prestigious college program where he completed his training in 2012. Jordan has performed his hand-balancing act in over 20 countries as well as at sea.
Lee Mai is a Juggler and circus enthusiast who is one of CirqueLouis’ most consummate and active performers. He is a regular fixture at CirqueLouis’ city wide events and productions, playing a Vaudeville star in Bootleg “Untapped” (2015) and Puck in “A Midsummer Night’s Circus” (2016) and major roles in Pinocchio (2016), East of the Sun (2017), and Kaleidoscope (2017). In addition to performing, Lee is also an instructor for CirqueLouis’ educational outreach and Social Circus program. Beyond circus, Lee enjoys food, good conversation, kindness, and cheesy sci-fi.
Abbie Springer grew up in Kansas City, Mo, but moved to Louisville to compete with the nationally ranked University of Louisville cheerleading squad and in 2009, she began her circus arts training. Abbie has trained extensively in doubles acts and apparatus (Acro, Adagio, Trapeze, Chandelyra, and Sphere). She has trained on Silks, Aerial Rope, Lyra and completed her instructional training through NECCA (New England Center for Circus Arts). Abbie has performed in CirqueLouis’ previous productions of Bootleg “Untapped” (2015), A Midsummer Night’s Circus (2016), Pinocchio (2016), East of the Sun (2017), and Kaleidoscope (2017).
BIG NEWS!
Circus is no cheap venture, especially when safety is a main priority (it is!). Proper circus equipment starts to add up extremely quickly, and when you’re starting from ground zero, those numbers can be monstrous. My goal is an aerial rig, two “grovers” (mats), a minimum of 30 good juggling balls, an aerial/ground cube, and other assorted manipulation equipment. (My personal trapeze can also be lent to the project.) All of these “apparatari” are fairly simple to learn and a basic performance level is attainable if students are willing to put in work to get there. BUT -- again, these things do not come cheap...
...soooo, I am thrilled to announce that I have been awarded an arts@Michigan grant to help cover the costs of my project! It won’t cover everything, but it will be a huge help! I am also planning on applying for a number of other grants, but it’s still September, and I’ve already got one locked down! Hooray :)
Circomedia takes the next step in circus education with a unique Masters in Directing for Circus

In the year that we celebrate 30 years of circus education in the UK Circomedia, Bristol’s Centre for Contemporary Circus and Physical Theatre, offers its first Masters Degree to add to an already impressive portfolio of courses offered at its Academy.
The MA, which is the first of its kind in the UK, and indeed unique in the world, has been established in response to a recognised need in the contemporary circus industry and the Arts Council of England for the development of a new kind of performance director, one that specialises in directing for circus.
As an established Academy, with an impressive history spanning back thirty years in promoting and producing acts with a high focus in contemporary circus with physical theatre, Circomedia is the ideal organisation to host this unique MA in directing. Its engagement with academic accreditation has developed over the last eight years, with diplomas, a Foundation Degree and a BA (Hons) degree being added to what it can offer in full-time training.
Indeed, its current courses in physical theatre and contemporary circus produce graduates who can work confidently as individuals, or collaborate as part of an ensemble, to devise new and exciting pieces of theatre. But there are few people with the capability to single-handedly direct highly-skilled professionals and explore all the potential that using these skills can bring to a performance. Those that try tend to be either former circus performers with limited knowledge or choreographers and theatre directors trying to apply their methods to a genre with very different requirements and possibilities.
The Circomedia MA in Directing for Circus will explore circus direction in-depth through a variety of research methods and promote autonomous and collaborative learning. Students will also work with professionals in the industry and engage with current debates and discourses of the discipline to ensure they are at up-to-date with the most recent developments within such a specialised, but potentially diverse, industry.
Bim Mason, Artistic Director of Circomedia, says ‘We are really excited about the potential of this new MA to produce new directors who can develop the artform. Up until now most circus directors have simply learned on the job or come from theatre, which is a different kind of job. Because it is the first qualification of its kind, we have had interest from different parts of the world so its influence could be far and wide’
The MA in Directing for Circus is to be offered from September 2017 and is accredited by Bath Spa University.

As our students prepare for their final year shows, others have been preparing their auditions to join us in September 2016. Our final audition is fast approaching and our application deadline is on Wednesday 1st June.

Best challenge ever
It’s been about 7 months since I started Circomedia and although it has been challenging I can honestly say it has been the single best experience of my life so far. I have learnt things that I will never forget and I have found a place where I can challenge myself constantly to progress and I cant wait to carry on!
