“Ran Away With Circus,” The Ontarian (Belleville). July 10, 1919. Page 07. --- Last week Chief Ruse was asked to locate James E. Smith, of Hamilton township, a sixteen-year-old boy, who joined Sparks’ circus while it was here June 24th. Chief Ruse communicated with Sudbury and Campbellford where circus was to show and from the former’s chief of police learned that a boy answering Smith’s description had joined the circus here but had left it at Parry Sound. His uncle, who resides on Front Road West, went out to Campbellford on Wednesday, in an endeavor to locate the boy. - Cobourg Sentinel Review.
“Robbed and Beaten by Hoboes On Car, Ottawa Man Claims,” Ottawa Citizen. September 15, 1938. Page 13. ---- Canadian Press MONTREAL, Sept. 14. - Claiming he had been beaten and robbed of $75 in a Canadian National Railways’ freight car, Edward Quinlan, 40, of 52 Third Avenue, Ottawa, was admitted to hospital here tonight suffering from a fractured nose, general lacerations and bruises. Employed previously at the Toronto exhibition, Quinlan told hospital authorities he was coming to Montreal to obtain employment when the attack occurred. He said two hoboes with whom he had made friends after jumping the freight Tuesday at the Queen City attacked him at Coteau Junction and the fight continued too the Turcot yards, where he managed to jump, minus his money, watch and other valuables. Bleeding from his injuries, Quinlan wandered into the city and was directed to the hospital. He was able to give but a vague description of his assailants. --- Edward Quinlan, who said he was beaten up and robbed of $75 in Montreal yesterday, visited his brother, M. Quinlan, of 52 Third avenue last week-end. Relatives understood that he left Monday for Montreal. They had not been informed previously of the reported incident.
“Nearly Killed,” The Ontarian (Belleville). June 19, 1919. Page 09. --- A circus employee who had crawled upon the tender of the locomotive drawing the circus train from Peterboro to Havelock on Sunday morning, had a very narrow escape from death here. He had fallen asleep and when the locomotive was detached here and run around to the coal shutes for a supply of coal, some eight tons of heavy steam coal was dropped over him. Fortunately, a shelf of steel partly protected him and his struggles and muffled cries for help, drew the attention of the train crew to his predicament, and he was shovelled out badly bruised and somewhat disfigured but still alive. After restoratives had been given to him, he was sent on to rejoin the circus at Smiths Falls, on a freight train, and it is safe to bet that he will not select a coal tender for a couch in future. - Havelock Standard.
