This is the title track of 'The Order of the Slithering Serpent'. "The Order" of the Slithering Serpent is a secret society. The song was named the Slithering Serpent because it sounds like... a slithering serpent!
Sean wrote the music (the root of it). The band was in a place where we were playing with virtuoso, musician strangers, with eclectic instruments who had never heard our songs before!
First and foremost we had a harp player named Ricky Rasura (Polyphonic Spree). There's a section in this song after 3 min 30 seconds where we all drop out and let Ricky go. It was random & perfect. Then we had Gabe Noel on Cello - he said he heard ghosts and laid down the cello accordingly.
The song is lyrically about faith, free will, and fate. I personally believe in fate over free will. I'm sure at least half of the people who read this will disagree.
Picture the end of the song taking place in a graveyard - with 4 hand saws. Sean's guitar is the wind. There is soul crushing trumpet by Tom Terrell, and Ricky's stellar interpretation of Sean's chord progression.
If Tom Robbins were writing this he would explain it as 'A sound from the room of the wolf-mother wallpaper. A sound emanating from the room where Jezebel frescoed her eyelids with history's tragic glitter, where Delilah practiced for her beautician's license, the room in which Salome dropped the seventh veil while dancing the dance of ultimate cognition, skinny legs and all."
