Elias had roused himself out of the comfort of his bed early. It was a beautiful morning; dew clinging to the leaves, birds chirping, the sun light spilling lazily through the windows, casting small prisms of light here and there.

Unfortunately for him, he had things to-do.

He sat down at the kitchen table while Silky, his maid prepared his morning cuppa tea.

The Mage Of Thorns began to scribble out a welcoming note for his brand new assistant to discover. What better way to break her in? Delegation.

Good Morning Ciri,

I hope you slept well. Break of the fast will be waiting for you upon the table, eat. For you will need your energy. Please see the list of things to-do for the day.

➽Please check on the tinctures in the apothecary. Unscrew the cap, check for mold, give them a sniff, if there is anything amiss or smells rancid, let me know. Cap them tightly, shake them for three minutes, set them back upon the shelf.

➽Do not break anything.

➽Water the plants in the greenhouse.

➽Replace the millet in the bird feeder for my army of loyal sparrows.

➽Harvest the abundant flourish of green tomatoes in the garden. Silky would like to fry them up for dinner.

When you have completed the tasks, come find me. I will be waiting.

“I do? But that’s a good thing, isn’t it? I was able to handle everything fine after all.” He nods with continued confidence, barely a sweat broken as he sheaths the great sword back behind him and claps his hands with a sigh of relief. 

“I wasn’t always this good at fighting, or farming for that matter. If you saw me a few years ago it’d be a different situation, of course... the me back then wouldn’t have taken you out here if I was that scared.” He laughs lightly, because this is a lighthearted matter and it’s not a big deal he just took down a raging insect monster thing with a few well timed swings. And only a few years separated that confidence and him considering himself an amateur.

“Either way I’m glad you’re not hurt. Did you want to keep going? We may run into more, but I’ll be ready.”

Thank goodness his sisters weren’t here when Ciri asked this question. Otherwise, she would’ve gotten an earful about the time he used his alchemy to burn toast. It happened once, and it was just after he became a certified State Alchemist, but they refused to let him forget it. With it just being him and Ciri, Roy nodded his head.

“Yeah, a lot,” he replied with a sigh, “Especially when I was first learning my alchemy. My hands and arms were covered in first and second degree burns for a while.” He ran one finger up his right arm from his fingertips to near his shoulder. The burns, when he was still learning, extended that far. “My alchemy looks pretty easy to perform now, but there was a steep learning curve involved. I became an unofficial expert in how to treat burns because of it.”

Was it that surprising that the Flame Alchemist burned himself? To him, it was expected. Fire wasn’t a toy to be played with. It lived and breathed, and commanding it was no easy task. Though, what prompted this question from Ciri, he wondered. Both eyebrows raised just a tad, he tilted his head to the side.

“Why’d you ask? You’re not about to ask me to teach you how to perform flame alchemy, are you?” It happened more than once: people asking him questions about his alchemy in an attempt to learn it. She’d forgive him for being cautious, yes?

Ian what the fuck!!! You can’t just do this to me!!! My juice isn’t nearly as refreshing as yours anyway, just so you know. I’ve said it once I’ll say it a bunch of times how glad I am we’ve been writing together and been friends this long, since you will remain an equal inspiration with writing. Characterization, dialogue, tone, cleverness... I look up to you a lot. So it means a lot that you’re also looking up to me.

Xerxes snorted. ‘A little advice? Save it for someone who deserves it.’

He crossed his arms and leaned against the side of Ciri’s van, shaking his head. ‘That man is in the position he’s in because he couldn’t overcome his damnable pride enough to trust or respect anyone less than his precious queen. Anyone else he encounters is too far beneath him.’

It was not hard for him to anticipate what Ciri would say next, so he raised a finger irritably. ‘And ah-- no-- before you start let me just remind you that it isn’t a harmless sin, either. He is a glorified watchman. He has responsibilities. When he fails to recognize the rights of his subjects those rights aren’t vindicated. When he elects disdain rather than mercy, someone feels the sting of either his blade or shackles.’

For a moment, Xerxes bristled. You could almost see impressions of the revolutionary propagandist he’d been in his glory days where the glow from the van’s windows caught on the sharp angles of his face. Then he crossed his arms and merely chuckled.

‘Oh, if I were a bitterer man and the price of collapse weren’t so dear I would enjoy watching the Crystal Palace crumble in on his head.’

You are so very lucky I love you Ian because it is almost 4am here and I am about to pass out but I will gush about you anyway even though you cheated the system and are profiting from it fsgdhfkgdyu.

IAN I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH!! I have known you for way more years than I would ever like to count, but it’s been MANY. I can’t even recall a time I haven’t had you on my dash as a result! You’re just always here, no matter where I go and despite the fact that our fandoms never overlap, but we always find ways to make it work, and I can’t imagine not writing with you or having you in my life! Seeing you on my dash just feels comfy! Like, ah, this is how it should be! And ooc you’ve always been super kind and easy to chat with! Plus, you’re very funny gdfjgkd. You’ve got a good sense of humor about everything in general, and I just love all that’s resulted in! Our conversations are always fun, and I love how unabashedly and shamelessly yourself you are! You like what you like, and you’re going to do what makes you happy/comfortable, and I love that about you! Honestly, soft top Ciri will always live rent free in my head and I will fight for her rights!!! And you’ve been so many places, and as someone who has, thus far, only been two countries other than their own, that is so very impressive and neat to me! And you know so many languages too which is also super neat to me! Did you know you’re super cool? Yes, even with your love of cheesy otomes because cheesy otomes are still good, as are cheesy dramas and I still need to finish that one I want to! Screw the main couple, I want to see what happens with fox girl and god who doesn’t deserve her! You’re also just super chill! I love you lots, and I am so glad we met all those years ago, and I am so very proud to call you my friend and blessed to have you around! I hope getting your bf over isn’t as awful of a process as it seems and that your next week of work is relaxed/decent! 

Where do I begin with Ciri and your writing? You know how much I love Ciri. She is so very wonderful, and I am so so invested in her as a character! She’s so very human, and I’ve said that before, and when I say that I mean in terms of how realistic she is. She feels like a person you could actually just bump into one day - she feels very much alive with the way you write her! And I love how you just let her be her. She’s just doing what she can the way she can, and that’s wonderful! I know how much love and time and effort you’ve put into her given how long I’ve been writing with her, and despite the fact that I’ve written with Ciri for years I know that every interaction with her will bring something new to the table! And the fact that you’ve made me love her so much just means I am also hungering for more Ciri content in my life! She’s like a beloved character from a favorite book to me at this point, and I just want to give her lots of love and read all about her and see where her various adventures take her! And your writing is wonderful too! I love seeing how Ciri interacts with others, and getting a response from you is always a delight because that means I’m getting that Ciri content I crave! But I think your writing really lets Ciri live! The way you describe her choices and her motions is always very telling about her as a person, and I love the insight it gives! I love threading with you and I love Ciri so very much!
