I'm so sorry for your loss, too. Ianto was such a sweet little grump, giving me advice about taking care of Bu. Lots of love to you <3
Aw, thank you so much. <3

He's royal blue but his head is black and his ventral fins are red. His belly and gill area got sort of white and puffy and he was extremely lethargic, and then after several water changes and such the scales around his normally dark black head lightened up, he started darting against the glass, and his fins looked like fin rot. I couldn't figure out what the heck it was. Now he seems to be fine, but he's got this green shimmer all over... it's very weird.
The darting could be a sign of parasites, yes, especially if he's rubbing. White and puffy? Does it look fluffy? Or is the puffy more like swelling? The "white and puffy" initially makes me think of fungus. The lightening of his face is likely an indicator of stress since bettas will lose colour when they're stressed. Do you have any pictures? Those would be really helpful to narrow it down.
Hi :) sorry I keep asking so many questions! But, is it normal for fin regrowth after some random parasitic infection/finrot to be a different color than it was before? Bu's tail is greenish now, and I don't know if it's safe to assume it's regrowth or if there's some crazy green parasite I don't know about, since I never felt like I solidly diagnosed him? Thank you!
No need to apologize. :) I like to help out however I can!
There can be subtle changes, yes, as the colour fills in again (unless you're dealing with the marble gene, in which case the fins will constantly changing colours, anyway).
As far as I know, there's no greenish parasite, haha.
You'll need to give your buddy time for the fins to regrow, too. It can be painfully annoying to watch. It can take weeks, months, before fins heal up and look more smooth.
What colour is Bu normally? It could be more of the iridescent (shimmer) you're seeing.
Hi there! I was just wondering for future reference, in your experience is it cheaper/better to purchase a kit with filter, hood, light, etc. or get a basic glass aquarium and assemble the rest of the stuff yourself, buying everything separately (making sure the wattage of the heater/light and power of the filter is appropriate, of course)? Also, if you buy a basic glass aquarium, how do you fit a hood/lid if it doesn't come with the aquarium? thank you! :)
Hey, there! :) What a lovely and thought-provoking question.
My owner personally believes that it's better to just buy everything separately, even if it's typically the more expensive option, because you'll have more control over exactly what you have in your tank.
If you take the time to shop around, you can find plenty of equipment for your aquarium at reasonable prices (but the bare minimum you'll likely spend on startup costs for a very basic tank is $50-$100). Unfortunately, even just a glass tank alone without accessories can still potentially cost you at least $20-$30 or more when purchased online or in-store. If you're in a real bind, look on local classified ad sites to see if people are giving away old tanks and equipment for dirt cheap (although you need to be extra vigilant with inspecting and cleaning). Some chain pet stores also have a-dollar-per-gallon sales that are excellent for purchasing new tanks.
The price ranges vary for starter kits. For example, I see some 5-gallon starter kits on Amazon for around $30 while others are closer to $70. (I highly recommend never going below 2.5 gallons for a single betta; 5 gallons and higher is highly recommended because they provide plenty of space, can be safely heated, can hold strong cycles, and require less maintenance overall).
Honestly, most of the starter kits don't always include the best supplies (or even everything you need). For example, many people seem to complain about the included filters and end up getting their own (or at least needing to buffer the included filters). Also, I haven't seen a good starter kit yet that includes a heater, which is an absolute must if you have a betta. Anything above 5 gallons also require filtration.
So, as you can see, to have a proper setup either way, you'll need to put aside some money. However, my owner's personal preference is to put together her own setup. HOWEVER, she very much would love to have something from the Fluval series sometime (although there's not really much in the way of a starter kit). Having one of those heavily planted with some driftwood would be quite lovely.
How about my followers? What are your preferences when it comes to starting a tank from scratch or getting a starter kit? Also, does anyone have handy DIY aquarium hood guides to share? <3
Thank you! I hope this helps. :)
