Martin Scorsese was trying to get together a cast for his first (failed) attempt at filming the controversial 1955 novel. During the first round of auditions, Madonna tried out for the part of the Virgin Mary with casting agent Cis Corman, but didn’t get the part. It is unclear if she met Scorsese during her audition.
