Edinburgh’s Christmas features the Star Flyer - although 60 metres tall, it is overshadowed by the Scott Monument. It is easy to believe at a distance that the riders are spinning round the monument. Edinburgh Castle is celebrating St Andrew’s Day with a Saltire projected onto the rock. One year ago the idea was rejected too “political”. Also projected tonight is a short film with a series of messages aimed at inspiring the public to #BeLikeStAndrew . It is a while since I posted St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh’s West End, but it was looking stunning this morning. It was built in1879 but the two main spires were not added till 1917. The architect was Sir George Gilbert Scott in his gothic revival style, seen also in Glasgow University. Edinburgh's West End facing the late afternoon sun. It is more than 2 years since I pictured this street and this is now Charlotte Baptist Chapel, formerly St George's West. Between its opening in 1869 - following the Church of Scotland Disruption of 1843 -and until reunification in 1929, it was St George’s free Church. The way in which congregations have moved around Edinburgh’s West End over the last couple of centuries is fascinating. The 56 metre bell tower designed by Edinburgh’s Sir Robert Rowand Anderson was based on St Giorgio Maggiore in Venice.
